Where is the fuel filter? 97~E420

Where is the fuel filter? 97~E420
I hear it located near 'the passenger rear of the car, behind a plate/cover of sorts'. I see one right behind the rear tire 'about 4inx3in or so' that goes up into the fender well. There is a oval shaped container in there, with two 'pipes or lines' going up there somewhere. Pointers? before I start taking random thing apart.
