Question Hi Folks, am I in the right forum ?

E200, clock display problem

Hi Folks, this is my first post (of many!)

name is James,(senior citizen, 75+)London,England.

havejust parted with my trusty old 230TE Estate Wagon(1985, 123 model) after 18 years and purchased an E200, (W210) 1997, Elegance model Estate from Ebay online. (Probably big mistake! The car does not match the glowing description given on Ebay ) and seller has lost ? the M/B service books and history

Fault on digital clock display at the bottom of the
rev counter dial - the digits do not light up
but the clock is showing accurate time (can only be seen in bright daylight)

The rest of the digital displays, mileage odometer, outside temperature, etc. show clear and bright orange digits. Previous owner says he thinks the clock just needs a new lamp bulb...

Can anyone advise on a small black electrical box
mounted in rear left hand-side of car looking in from the tailgate - it has two pins marked 12v + and -
Would it be a direct connection to the battery for external charging or what ?

I've only had the car for a few hours, still trying to find my way around it, haven't found the battery yet...

I thank you one and all for any information on the clock display light problem - and for probably a few dozen more queries from me in the next few weeks.

Thanks, James

Can't help you with the black box but, if your 210 is like my 01 model the clock problem is a light bulb. I had one fail and the dealer replaced it.

Welcome James, I believe the problem with your clock is just that a simple bulb it out (as previously mentioned). The dealership may charge you quite a bit to change a £2 bulb (yes those little bulbs cost a lot), but you are adventurous you may be able to do it yourself...

First thing, the Elegance model may not have an adjustable steering wheel. If you cannot adjust the steering wheel, stop and let the dealer do it, althought he labour charge may be in excess of £50.

At a certain point, the cost might not be worth it, as the previous owner probably decided.

The battery is under the rear seat.
