Looking at E320 wagons for the wife. I don't want to afford anything more than a 2001 model year. What years from 1998 should I avoid? Any common flaws. Living in Boston and looking at 4matics.
I usually look to fix things myself before bringing to a mechanic. Unless its internal engine or tranny related. So I wonder if a 1999 model year would suffice.
Thanks.

Just went through similar thoughts.
Settled on a model year 2000. New front end, slightly different interior. More airbags. Cooler steering wheel and blinkers on the side mirrors.
CD changer connection is fiber optic from 2000 on, which complicates things if it's not included.
Check doorposts for rust, A/C for proper cooling.
That's pretty much what I know.

A 2001 might have a year left on the warranty if it's below 48K miles.

At least look at a 2001 before you make the buying decision. Interior nicer than previous years. I had '97 and '99 E320s, the '01 was much nicer. Good luck.
