W or S

What are the W & S buttons on the shifter console abreviations for? Shouldn't the default selection be "S"?

W can be used on other occasions as well, anytime it would be to your advantage to start out in 2nd gear rather than 1st.

In W mode, car starts at 2nd gear.
In S mode, car starts at 1st gear.

I like W for slow bumper to bumper Boston traffic. It's smoother. I wonder how it affects mileage.

Actually,I find it easier to use the S mode in slow traffic,it allows you to creep along without hitting the brake much.W is nice in the snow, especially if you have good snow tires.My.02$

i normaly am always in S but i have to switch to W when it rains too because in S, i have a tendency to make the tires spin a little. and i always thought the s = standard and w = wet

I dont think the gears are set up for seasons. They are set up for weather conditions

I think this is correct. (S)tandard and (W)et

Since it does rain in the summer and it doesnt snow all winter i think that the above would be more correct.

I have a 4matic so I hardly ever have to use the W setting. Actually let me take that back. I've yet to experience a winter with my Benz, so i'll update this thread once i have.
