Location of the water temperature sensor- 1998 E300

Mercedes E300D. I suspect that my temperature gauge is reading too high. Why: I bought new thermostat, pulled the housing off, and there was NO thermostat in the housing! Just the base of the old one. The temperature had been reading 80 for several years. With the new thermostat, it now shows about a 95 degrees C.
So, I bought a new temperature sensor, but I can not locate the old one!!
Could someone point me in the right direction.
I had another E300D, I had repaired everything, and someone rear ended me. The car saved my behind! So, I went out and bought another just like it. But this one needs lots of little stuff, but I am getting close to finishing it.
But I can't find the temperature sensor location.
Help.
Gary

I saw the diagram, but it really doesn't show me where the sensor is located on the engine.

It's located on the left side (driver's side if in the US) of the head toward the back. You'll likely need to take off the intake manifold to be able to access it.

Thanks Jessie. My biggest fear other than removing the fan is the intake.
