I own a 1998 E300 Turbo Diesel. Car is absolutely perfect. Well optioned, shocks, a/c, tires, suspension, headlights, all good or recently replaced. Uses no oil, shifts firmly, I just got thru telling myself, this car is perfect. Then, it starts running rough at idle and check engine electronics lights up. I take the injectors out and have them checked just to make sure it is not them. They tested fine. From what I have read it is probably the injection pump or the electronic part of that pump. I can get reman pump from Mercedes for about $900 and install myself. Problem is I have 8 vehicles and have been trying to sell this one for a while but at a concours price. Regular book value is low. Car has 312,000 miles but you couldn't tell it. I have a 2012 E350 Blutec that I would rather drive. Much faster (yes its chipped). Do I: 1- sell car as is for a give away price; 2- replace injection pump and hopefully sell for more; 3- replace injection pump and keep and drive.
I tend to collect and restore cars. Collectible ones. The Mercedes that I have are the driving kind, not collectible kind. But saying that, since there will no longer ever be any more Mercedes diesels imported into this country, they may be collectible one day.
Nice collection. The W210 is known for rust, and it appears you are starting to experience age/mileage related problems. I don't see your particular 300k+ miles specimen as having a future with a higher value, sorry to say. It does look nice.
The W210 is not one of the "wonderful Mercedes diesels" of the late 20th century.
It's worth about $5-6k, with the running problem fixed of course. I had a super-clean '99 black over tan I sold in 2015 for $6k. I think it had around 225k miles. The value hasn't gone up at all since. Keep in mind you can buy the much better w211 CDI in the $7k range. This sets the price ceiling for the 210 diesels.
My 210 diesel was a good car for around town driving. Highway trips were annoying with the lower rear end gearing and the insane decision of MB engineers to not lock up the torque converter in 5th gear. Total waste of engine RPM and fuel.

Yes, I was offered $6000 for it about a year ago and didn't sell. Bad decision. Since then replaced the evaporator & compressor, tires, front end work, motor mounts, and now this injection pump.
I had a W211 diesel along with my current W212 diesel. Like the 12 E350 diesel a lot, but boy was it difficult to chip. I don't think the engine will be a durable as the W210 but time will tell.
