'00 E320, "brake lining wear" + loud sound when coming to a stop

We have a 2000 E320, and about a few days ago the malfunction message came up saying "Brake Lining Wear, Visit Workshop!"...we are taking the car in in the next couple of days. However, there is also a loud whining sound when coming to a stop.It sounds like its coming from the front-right wheel area, and starts out as a high pitch when you're at speed, then a lower pitch sound when coming to the stop. does this have to do with the brake lining, or is it something else?thanks

Do you know if there aftermarket brake pads?
You will probably need new brake pads.

I believe that you have worn the pads too far by delaying your trip to the dealer. The noise is most likely metal against metal due to the excessive wear on the pads. Most likely you will also need new rotors maybe front only

Red face Brake lining wear warning light

Hi I have the same problem on my c320. However, I don't understand that it could be the brakes or the pads b/c i just got my AMG brakes installed like 6 mo's ago and i hardly drive the car. I just got my "brake lining wear" light on. Can anyone help me on figuring out what it means? BTW..the AMG brakes were installed by a friend, but he knowledgble of installing brakes..

Thanks

This is super easy:

The "Brake Lining Wear" trouble code is caused by a small sensor on the inside edge of brake pad. As the pad wears wear, this sensor, just a wire really, moves closes and close to the edge of the pad. When the pad wears down low enough, when the brakes are depressed, the sensor will touch the rotor. This makes the indicator light go on.

If you have this indicator light, you have 3 things.

1) a fault break wear circuit, a faulty break wear sensor
2) the sensor has poped out, somehow and is making contact against the rotor. FYI, it's designed not to do this and would be difficult. I'm betting against it.
3) Most likely, your pads have worn out. Take your wheel off and look at your pads. IT's that easy.

On a 2000 model, depending on how many miles are on the pads....they are most certainly worn out and need to be replaced. Get ready to pop for a new set of rotors also.
