99 E320 4matic Wheel Options

Hi,I am a total newbie so please excuse my seeming ignorance. I have read over many of the threads and did read the stickers and I am still left with a question which I could not find a definitive answer to. I have a 99 320 4Matic, with no modifications and currently has 16x7.5 wheels. I have been searching for replacement wheels and was told by my mechanic to stick with 16 inch wheels. he said that wall larger wheels will fit, it will throw off the scrub and pose potential handling problems. As I said I am a total notice/newbie so I’m not even sure what this means. I have been doing a lot of reading and it seems as though the 4Matic is considerably more sensitive than it’s rear wheel drive counterpart. My question is as follows, when Mercedes offered this car no, were 17 inch wheels an option? Or was it only originally spected for 16 inch wheels? I am trying to find out if 17 inch wheels fit the OEM specifications for the 4Matic. I really don’t want to deviate too far from OEM specifications as I don’t want to build in any room for new problems. I don’t hate the size, it’s just that I can’t find many 16 options that are not butt ugly. Thanks for any insights!

w210 AMG or S213
4matics were offered with 17s. I had 18s on mine old car. As long as the tires are the same size all around it should not cause any issues for the transmission / transfer case.

18 x 8 from a W211 E500.

17s from a E430 Sport
