Does anyone know how to check the oil level from the dash? I've tried it a few dozen times over the past year, but only twice did I get an oil level measurement. What usually happens is that I get the message to turn on the ignition. After I do that, I get a message "Not with ignition on". So I keep going on in circles.

 

On my 01 E 320 4 matic its ignition on, engine not running. Of course car should be on level ground and should have been sitting for a bit so all the oil drains down from the upper portion of the engine
