E420 vs E 430

I am in the process of making a decision to buy either a 97 E420 or a 98 E 430. I will like to hear from members of this board as to reliability issues on both models and also the 3 valve versus 4 valve configuration issues. Will the 4 valve configuration of the E 420 pose mechanical service problems down the line. I intend to keep the car for a while. Any help and comments appreciated.

I have owned both a 95 E420 and 00 E430. I believe the engines in the 97 E420 were basically the same as in 1995. I know the chassis are different, but I would definitely go with the E430. Lighter, more efficient, same basic hp and torque. One thing that makes a big difference is the 5-speed automatic in the later cars. My E430 is much faster, smoother than E420. Gets better mileage too.

Solferino, I agree 100% with Mikey.
In late 1999, Mercedes did a face lift to the W210. there are many, many enhancements: 5 speeds automatic, GPS system, suspension, wheels (17), FSS, EPS, electronic Key, 4 years free maintenance including oil change..., and also the exterior look (front bumper, hood, rear back light,...)

I had a 1997 E320, no problem at all, but it's very firm (ride and seat), it's an old generation German car: too firm. The 2000 (and up) model now is much softer, very confortable, like 'a la' Lexus.
Lexus is to soft, the 2000 is in between. I think they did a very good job.
So, get the 2000 E430 (late 1999, model 2000).

97 E420
I own a 97 E420 so I may be biased, but I purchased this car new even though I had the opportunity to buy the 98 E430.

First off, the 97 is a 5 spd tranny. I just like the sound of the "older" engines. Purrs like a V-8, the newer engines are too 'quiet' for my taste...like a Lexus...too bland. I also do not like the slight 'ticking' sound the new 3 valve engines make.

I do believe the 430 is more efficient and less pollutant and possibly better gas consumption...

Also remember that the 4.2 engine has been around for a long time and is very strong. The 4.3 engine was brand new in 1st yr production in 98.

I also think the FSS is pretty bogus. Very convenient for MB to go to this 'system' the same year they start offering free maintenance...makes you wonder...even if my FSS light didn't come on, I would still do all maintenance religiously...cannot imagine 10k miles in between oil changes...

either car, you won't be disappointed...good luck

When I had a '95 C280 with 4-speed tranny, I was always uncomfortable at semi-illegal highway speeds (around 70mph in these parts). The tach approached 3k at that speed, and I was always 'aware' of the revs. For me, very uncomfortable for various reasons.
The 5-speed in the 430 allows a much more comfortable tach level for me (2k@ 70mph), and the gas mileage is about the same, even though the engine size is that much larger.

I didn't realize the 420 also had the 5-speed auto.
