Night illumination

I thought than on my 1997 e420 the low beam and fog lights are supposed tyo go on when I open the door to light a path at night and then go off automatically? Anyone know why it is not working? Could it be a sensor on the dash? Is there a way to fix this?

mercedeslover,

if i'm not mistaken, the citylights and foglights go on after you've turned the headlights off and closed the door once you've stepped out of your car. The lights won't automatically turn on just by opening the door at night. The headlights must have been on prior to closing the door thus a path is illuminated in front of your car. Hope that helps. If it didn't well good luck in solving the problem.

From a 2002 E320 Manual

Night security illumination

When exiting the vehicle after driving with the exterior
lamps on, they switch on again for added illumination
for approximately 30 seconds after closing the last door.
The lamp-on time period can be changed at your
Mercedes-Benz Center.

They're geared for people who need to see their way into the house or garage
after leaving the car at night....

Mine are not illuminating at night after I turn off the lights and close the door. Does every other 1997 w210 have the night illumination feature? Is there a sensor or something that may have stopped working?

Help.

I'm not sure about the older models, but in my '04 this is what has to be done for the lights to be left on after you exit the vehicle:

1st the headlight selector has to be on Auto (1st turn to the right from neutral position (off)

2nd you must have this feature selected on the convenience light menu in the dash (you can adjust it from 0 seconds and upwards to how long it will last before turning off).

Not sure about the 97 models though.

Mine does work after turning off the headlight and closing the last door. It turns the fog and city light on and turns off after 30 sec. If yours' not working, then check the fuse for possible burnt. It's located on the driver side on the side of the dash board where you see a panel, adjacent to your light switch knob. Pop it off with a flathead and look on the cover and it has a diagram which fuse is it. Hopefully that would help you solve the problem.

I just checked and there was no fuses burnt out. Any other suggestions before I have to take it to the stealer/dealer?
