Check engine electronics dash light

I have a 1997 E 300 D. My light comes on and goes off. It comes on after the engine seems to miss. I have been told that the problem is likely the EGR valve(s). Mercedes charges about $180 for the diagnostic test then $450 for the valves plus about $300 for the labor. I have about 115K miles on the car. Is this the likely problem and can I fix or replace the valves, perhaps one at a time and do it myself?
Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated.

YOu can go to any any shop that specialize German cars, and get a much better deal. EGR valve is not something we can just replace like air filter or MAF, but shouldn't cost you $1K to fix.

My mechanic replaced the EGR valve as part of major tune up (90K mile), and I only paid $900 for the whole thing.

$180 for plugging in the ODB-2 scanner and read the damn code is outrage.
