I'm seriously considering buying a used E300TD. Can anyone tell me about the reliability of the engine? Any problem areas with the car?

After reading through some of the posts here (in particular the "is w210 the best benz ever made?"), I'm having second thoughts...

thanks!

Overall they are great vehicles. Great efficiency and luxurious ride. They are great D-I-Yer type vehicles to work on. Many have griped about replacing glow plugs being a pain. Replaced the glow plugs on our '99 a few weeks ago and it was painless. I guess it's a matter of how hard the previous person that replaced the plugs torqued them down and if they used anti-sieze. Our didn't have the anti-seize and came out easily.

The '99 we have runs like a clock and my '97 is a little sick, needs some injector work. Nothing wrong with the design just necessary maintainence.

Some locations are still asking an astronomical amount for the E300's. If you get a good price on it, grab it.

I would never buy a late model Mercedes again without an extended warranty.

Wanna buy mine?

Michakaveli, did you remove the intake manifold to do the glow plug replacement?

Yea we did. I cleaned out the entire intake manifold oil/soot paste with some degreaser, diesel fuel and an Oatey copper pip cleaner to brush out the crap from the head and ports on the manifold. Also did the elephant hose mod. No more gunked up intake from now on. Didn't disable the EGR because I wasn't sure if I would have enough time to remove the corrugated pipe since we needed the car for the next day. Either way I'm not too worried about the EGR, it will only dust the walls of the intake, with the compressed air pushing things through unallowing any new buildup.
