Installed a E 430 4Matic Transmission on a E 320 4Matic

Hello everyone, I installed a 2000 E430 4Matic 722.669 transmission on a 1998 E320 4Matic that had a 722.664, only physical difference was the "Park Lock" at the rear left of the transmission housing (I can live without that).

The car still has:
-Original Transmission Control Module (1998 e320 4Matic)
-Original Transfer Case (1998 e320 4Matic)

Fluid type and level are fine, new OE conductor plate, connector, filter and conductor plate connector seal.

THE ISSUE IS
I am getting these codes (see attached):
- 51 The gear implausible or the transmission is slipping.
- 147 The gear sporadically implausible or the transmission is sporadically slipping.

The gears engage smooth when I move the shifter, the car takes off fine but WILL NOT SHIFT UP FROM FIRST (or second)

-What should be my next step?
-What do you recommend replacing? and replacing it with what?

Thanks beforehand.

CLK 320
P0705 Transmission Range Sensor Circuit malfunction (PRNDL Input)
I'm dealing with the same almost except CLK320, Limp Modding the past year. 1/13 is bad, is it?
Here's

some stuff to get you started, I think its the Shift linkage or shifter, or gear recognition.

Hello @ToplesSadie2003 , It doesn’t seem like any of this is related to my post, my questiom is more of a compatibility question.

Thanks.

722.664 is for 4, 5, or 6-cylinder engines. 722.669 is for 8-cylinder engines. Different number of friction and steel discs in clutch packs K1 and K2 as well as in brake pack B3. ATSG 722.6 service manual indicates a 3-pinon carrier is installed in the 4/6 cylinder version and a 4-pinion carrier in the 8-cylinder version; each allows for different tooth counts on the center and rear planetary gear sets. I would hazard a guess it is the difference in the center and rear planetary gear sets causing the issue. To paraphrase from the manual, "Should one install an incorrect transmission, the computer will observe this as a slipping transmission and display gear ratio error codes". Be aware that a different rear differential ratio can also cause this issue.

Your TCU is looking for a pulse count from the 722.664 transmission and is receiving a different pulse count from the 722.669 transmission; to the TCU this indicates a "slipping" transmission.

Not having done this before I can only provide you a hypothesis...try installing a TCU from an E430 of the '98 or '99 model year as those both use the Motor Electronics 2.0 like your car. Those two model years have the 722.623 transmission but the manual shows plate counts as identical to the 722.669 in the clutch and brake packs. The manual I have does not address if there is any difference in the ratios of the planetary gear sets so that is a complete unknown. As mentioned above, if the E430 differential ratio is different from your E320, the Motor Electronics may still throw codes as the transmission speeds do not match up with the expected wheel rotational speeds. May not happen but something to keep in mind.

Buy a copy of the "ATSG 722.6 Transmission Manual" and read to your heart's content. Provides cool VIN decoding info such as the 4th through 7th numbers of your car should be "JF82" if the sedan and "JH82" if the wagon. Additionally, the 722.664 is a W5A330 and the 722.669 is a W5A580. The last three digits refer to the maximum input torque.

Best of luck to you and let us know how it works out for you.

As always, my experience are from other make and model, so it may not apply to our beloved MB, but just want to share some insights and experience.

I have a old 86' (Yes! that's 1986!) Monte Carlo SS. This car have 200-4R 4-speed transmission. It has a same designation /name transmission from regular/station wagon, such as regular Monte Carlo, Regal, Cutlass and Grand Prix but the performance model received all kind of upgrade, from valvebody all the way down to clutch and spring counts. Now, this was done almost 40 years ago.

In modern transmission which is electronically controlled, it certainly have different valve body (may have same valve body but internal spring pressure are certainly different), solenoid pack, shift timing programming and sensor count (for determine shaft speed), to name the least. The only fix that I know of, is to install the right transmission. Sorry for the bad news, but modern trans just won't interchange. Now, you MAY get away with custom programming from professional, but when all is said and done, it's probably cheaper and easier to just install the right transmission.

However! I am always open to new idea, so if and when you do have the fix for it, please share it here so I can learn from it.

Lastly, my experience are from different make and models, so may not apply to our MB (just wanted to remind everyone, again).
