Any one know what type and grade of oil was installed by the factory in my 01 E320 4 Matic?? I know that it may be Mobil 1 but I am not certain as this was an early(delivered Oct 2000) car and around the change over time to synthetic. Should I have to add oil I believe you are not supposed to mix regular to synthetic. I would have suspected that MB would have placed a decal under the hood if it had synthetic but it does not have one. I did get a letter from MB saying that at the first service It should be changed to synthetic by the dealer however first service has not yet been done as car only has 6000 miles.

 

I am using Mobil 1 from day one but did get a notice from MB to start using Mobil 1. I use 10w30 and it seems just fine.

 

Quote from my 01 MB Approved Product Manual "MB recommends only the use of MB pproved synthetis motor oil for all vehicles equipped with the FSS as of model year 1998". Then they go to list the approved viscosities: Mobil 1: 15W50, 0W40, Valvoline: 5W40; Castrol Syntech: 5W50, 10W40, and some more. The largest temperature range coverd is above 30C and below -25C (-13F) and the following viscosities are recommended: 0W30, 0W40, 5W30, 5W40, and 5W50.
