How Bad Is It?

I have the dreaded BAS/ABS/ESP lights on my 2002 E430 base. Foxwell NT510 w/38 pin connector pulls the following:

C1140 N49 Steering angle sensor cable has open circuit
BAS- No communication
B1156-002 The control unit is faulty
B1157-002 The control unit is faulty

Oh, did I mention the RED ABS light is on, don't recall any faults to that.

Called a local indy, he says sounds like ABS module, won't know for sure until testing. I get it. He adds that a refurb model installed is $2300. Whoa. I call a group I found on the internet called Wiseman Automart, give them my VIN and p/n for the ABS module installed and they come back with a price of $375 for a refurb module, including shipping and programming with a 90 day warranty.

I am not ready to fire off the parts cannon, however my questions are the following:
1) Anyone else here have the BAS/ABS/ESP lights and what was the fix?
2) Anyone with any experience with Wiseman Automart or other refurb shops for ABS modules
3) What am I missing other than labor and parts markup on the $2300 estimate for the refurb ABM module vs the $375 price? (I realize we don't know the exact issue yet
4) Can anyone make any sense of the codes I pulled?
TIA

If I remember correctly, the BAS/ABS/ESP lights on my car was caused by a defective brake light switch. I can't help you with the codes, but I recently bought a Foxwell with the 38 pin connector. When I first used it I had a zillion codes. I was not having any problems at the time so I erased them all. To my surprise, after the code clear the transmission shifted much more to my liking than before.

@nelbur Thanks for the reply. I did buy a brake light switch as I read it may be a fix. Once it gets below 100 around here I'll do the contortions to get it installed. I am not hopefully that is the fix. The BAS No communication error scares me.

2002 E430 schematics here:
https://mbworld.org/forums/e-class-w...ml#post8428167

Page 1 and 2 in the "W210 schematic 1 of 2" have the connections for the BAS module.

You can download additional info here:
https://charm.li/Mercedes%20Benz/

Use it online or download the .zip file for offline use. Once unzipped, you will find a folder with the same name but selecting "index.html" will open the files in a web browser. Helpful info but you will have to dig into it.

Follow-up: Replaced brake light switch, no dice. Took E430 back to local Indy #1, they looked at it and said this is too much for us and recommended local Indy #2 (who I had worked with prior). #2 says, "hey, based upon your lights, the ABS module may be under a special 25 year warranty extension with MB. Go to local dealer and have them diagnoise and determine." Call local dealer and they tell me they do not work on MB's older than 2005. Call MB USA and they say 25 year warranty was for W211's not W210's. Back to Indy #2, he says steering sensor is bad, part NLA. I negotiate if I get one off Ebay he'll install, NP. Part arrives, he installs, same issue. He then traces issue to a blown fuse in the back seat that connects to a now bad alarm sensor inside rf wheelwell. He replaces that and all is good. I was impressed with his electrial diagnoising capabilities. Total damage $800 plus $20 tip to tech.

That would have to be fuse #11 under the back seat. It provides power to the alarm and to the Electronic Stability Program module.
