In my .02$,,,the consensus is that K&N is a good add-on,Ive seen only positive reports here, except when members over-oil the thing. Its cheap enough that even when its time to change it,,,instead of oiling, buy a new one.

Bigger holes, less dense....lets in more crap...it makes sense but I'm sure a reputable firm that K&N must have done enuf R&D to ensure these are serviceable......can't remember where that thread is but who gives a dang anyways?

That happens after people clean them incorrectly. If you use gas or some other solvent, or get in a hurry and try to dry it with compressed air, it destroys the filtering ability and it will pass dirt, I've seen it happen. Just be sure to use K&N cleaner, let it air dry COMPLETELY, then re-oil. No problem. If you're in a hurry, just do what I do, and have a spare filter(s) to pop in while the other is getting cleaned/dried/oiled.

Air Filter

Here are 3 good choices for Air Filters. Mann, Hengst and Bosch. I normally use Mann Brand filters they are half the cost of Hengst and Bosch and provide good results.

AHSO,,,,thats even more reason not to mess with an old one,and buy a new one. BTW,,,whats the normal life expectancy of these things,,50K or something?
