I got a cluster problem on my e 280 w210 series 1997 model The cluster instruments work as normal but the digital readout display got digital strips on so that you can’t read the displays. The display readings are at the background. The only thing that I can think of is some of the digital pixels do not work. But on the other hand if the pixels went dead you wil not be able to get any readings but the readings are there at the background. I attached a photo that will show what it look like. The cluster lights work normal. When the readout start doing this the hole digital readout got the strips on and after a while driving it clear and back to normal. At present it do not clear. I come to a conclusion to replace the digital reading display if possible and can it be done other than replace the cluster. Any suggestions will help. Fanie
Looks like you enabled "bar code mode" (lol). Seriously though, it looks like an intermittent electrical connection. Are there any other flakey effects, like fluttering brightness?
This is a common problem with these old Mercedes, mine included, although mine is garbled numbers rather than vertical stripes. There are cluster repair services that will likely replace the ribbon cables to the display. I have not done it so I will let someone with experience recommend where to send it.
There is a guy that works for FCPEuro. His name is Kyle Bascombe. He has a website and a YouTube channel. He can repair the instrument cluster for you. Search his YouTube channel. He has some videos explaining the issues with these clusters.
