need some help
My e430 w/4matic started to make some wiard noise. it sounds like coming from rear mostly but sometimes i guess in front as well and it is getting often and worse. it is hard to describe what it is like but i will try my best.
It doesn't sound like ticking but more like to rattling but body or enigne are not rattling. it is sound more like diesel engine plus ticking or rattling and it makes me embarrased... ^^ it comes and goes away but mostly you can hear it doing it when it is in idle...
At the dealer visit about a couple months ago, they told me control arm or something like that is going bad and there are 4 of them, will cost $300 each. also, final drive is licking a bit but haven't seen any drops in my garage if this helps.

Well its not your suspension or control arms if you here it at idle. I had I a rattling sound that I used to have predominately when at a stop. Thought it was the cats turned out that one of the bolts that connected the cats to exhaust was loose.

My 1998 E320 has the exact same problem!! I was approaching the car when it was warming up and it sounded like a diesel!! 
I know the engine doesn't sound the smoothest at idle but it has never sounded that bad!! Then when it kinda dissapeared for a while then it comes back. I knew then it was something rattling somewhere around the middle of the car or so.
I did a search and it might have to do something with the catalytic converters (As Shane C says).
