cracked a rim

I sent all of my rims to be repaired due to excessive flats. As it turned out one of my wheels was cracked so through discount tire here in San Antonio the wheel was sent to the only local wheel repair shop Wheels America. The wheel was sent back and forth at least five times because they could not keep the air from escaping from underneath the weld after being repaired well today I was given a refund and told the wheel was un-repairable and given a quote for a new wheel. Normally I wouldn’t seek a second opinion but I have been told by 3 different people at discount tire that they are having all kinds of problems with Wheels America and that they are considering not using them anymore.

Has anyone experienced a cracked rim or familiar with aluminum welding it seems to me if done properly it should be impossible for air to escape from underneath the weld.

I had a cracked rim and even if its repaired, the next time you have a flat it will crack again. My rim was never the same. Once cracked out it will have consequences for rest of its life However, my rim was not made of aluminum or atelast i don't think that it was.

i have cracked a few rims and i would never want to get them repaired once cracked. a bent lip is different, but i dont think i would feel 100% safe riding a rim that was just welded. the rim cracked without any post-production welds, who knows how it will hold up now and the intergrity of the rim has def been compromised. i say flip it or make it into a coffee table by adding a piece of 1/2" thick tempered glass on top.

Normally I wouldnt even consider it but a replacement rim is $1400.00 for one. Once welded correctly it should be stronger than before right????? son of a biatch I may have to replace them with some knockoffs. damn might as well get 4 rims for the price of one

I have talked to a guy in PA who has vast experience with this situation and I may send it off to have him give it a shot.

Get some take off rims from dealer, junk yard or look for ebay or this forum for used ones. You can buy one for $150-200. I'd only repair rash and dented lips. Crack rim -- toss them...
