Question Why a 4-Matic?

I have seen a lot of positive comments about 4-matics. Though living in Southern California, there is not too much inclement weather.

What are the other positives that offset the decreased acceleration, fuel economy and complexity of the vehicle?

Thanks again!

There is no noticable decrease in performance. Gas mileage is still very good and the difference with 4Matic is insignificant. The 4Matic version I believe handles and rides much better and has a heavier feel. On the road it seems as if its on rails. It will also give you better traction in wet weather even if you do not have snow and offers a bit of SUV performance. I have driven both and I purchased the 4Matic. Try it before deciding

Hi,

I also live in Southern California, but I still opted for the 4-Matic (E430SE 4-Matic) despite our pretty good year-round weather. I've made comments on this post about the car not being as "tossable" as the non 4-Matic, but after reading Sosh's comments I think he more accurately captures the feel of the car. The added weight and constant connectivity of the four wheels to the drivetrain seems to help the stability of the car.

With respect to acceleration, I'm not sure. I've had two E320 non 4-Matics as loaner cars, and those seemed to get off the line quicker. I don't think it really makes sense spec wise, so perhaps I just haven't pushed mine as I did the "loaner" cars. As you know it's not always easy to find a stretch of road without any cars on it in LA!

I made reference to Sosh as a "he", so my apology if my assumption was wrong...

Previous to buying an '02 E430 4Matic S.E., I had a '99 E430 sport. The difference in handling is significant-Even in dry conditions, in my opinion. The new one feels much more solid and doesn't roll at all when taking a fast corner. The car is a tenth of a second slower, uses a little more gas, but handles as well as any sedan I've ever driven.

I made a big mistake when I negotiated my E320, the dealership was basically buying me out of my lemon ML320 at MBUSA's urging, so I had a lot of leverage.

The deal was incredible the offered, and somehow I got caught up in the color choices (or lack of) and didn't notice the car I selected was rear wheel drive.

I have noticed when using a loaner recently that the 4matic felt "sturdier" on the road, and handles better on wet pavement; however, it also seemed to have a slower "pickup" and seemed "clunky" around corners. I guess it's a matter of personal choice, but resale should be better on 4matics.
