E Class owners interested in the GST

I have posted 2 threads in the GST Forum. One pertains to the planned promotion campaign by MB for the new GST R Class and the other is some new pictures of the car.

Since some are following this closely I wanted you to be aware of the other Forum and hopefully keep you up to date.

Wow, to each their own. But, I have to admit, if there were no logos/name on that car and someone said "guess the maker," I would have said Hyundai first and just about every other manufacturer before getting anywhere near MB.

I think once you see the car you might change your mind. This car has been in development since at least 2002 (introduced as Concept) and as it matures in design, I think it will be well accepted. Based on the specs and hype, I am ready to jump but MB must meet the quality demands and deliver the car in the same vain they are hyping it to the public.

It kind of reminds me of a Toyota Matrix on steriods.

Agreed. Again, I fully understand that there's no "right" or "wrong" in automotive preference, but it really does look very Japanese/Korean and quite "cheap" on the exterior.

Anyway, I hope you love it - not trying to make personal jabs.

The roofline of the car is rememiscent of the the new CLS, the wheels are 20", the grille is consistent with the new line of MB's, the car is 203" in length (same as the S class), the styling is similar to a mini-van but is lower and more stylish, the car has air suspension and 4 wheel drive. So these things kind of get it out of the Japanese/Korean category and I guess I have a problem seeing "cheap" in the exterior presentation. I may be wrong and when I see the production model, I may change my mind but I think it will be consistent or above my present E in exterior quality.

You are correct there is no right or wrong in preference. We will both see what the final production model delivers and then make our final decisions on to buy or not to buy.

My first impression of it from side profile picures was that it looked like a Pacifica. But once I saw the actual vehicle in Germany, it looks great.

Certainly the Pacifica and the GST are from the same design sheet. But they are two different cars as you know well from actually seeing the GST. I would like to hear any specific comments you have after seeing the actual car as far as exterior size and interior finish, etc.

I have been following this car from conceptual drawings to the current Vision R show cars. I hope the car in the New York show is the US production version and is close to what we will get if we buy one. (I have a pre-order deposit on one now.)

You may want to watch CNBC "Closing Bell" today from 4:00PM EST. The segment examines the slip in MB quality. I noticed several clips of the R.

I'm with Nevada Jack in that I like this vehicle. I really need to see it in person, but I am assuming that if the R is going to be at the NY show this Saturday, that it will be the production model.

Clearly can't judge the car without seeing it - but one thing is certain. There is a 100% certainty that I will never buy a 1st year model M-B.

See the DC article on the GST Forum I posted today. It lays out the plan to hype the R Class and speaks of getting closer to the "production model." I think we still have some modifications to come. I hope they are not significant.

Thanks for the tip...I just watched it here. First long video I have seen of the R Class...looks pretty nice to me...:-)

I think the clip was pretty fair when they point out that many of the quality problems are with the electronics and new engineering. This is probably the area that Juergen S. probably tried to cut corners. Things have gotten better I think and with the pressure to improve quality, they can recover the damage to their image.

I have been driving MB since the early 70's and have had several first year editions. I have never had any catastrophic failures or major problems with any of them including my 2003 E which I am now driving. I am not saying there no problems with new models, but I have not experienced any of them.

If the R Class gets to the showroom with the features that the show cars are displaying, then I will post pictures here of hopefully the first or one of the first owners of this new model. I just hope I can get a good loaner should I need it from the Service Department...:-)

Jack -

Glad you experiences have been good. The early '03 I am driving has driven me crazy with all kinds of little annoying stuff.

Never been stranded - :fingerscrossed: but irritated beyond belief.
