dvd burning help

since i have no access to pre burned dvds and i have a bunch of music on my hard drive, i searched the threads and came to the conclusion i could burn audio dvd's using nero software.
any help here would be appreciated..tia.
i have dell pc about 2 yrs old, 1.8 ghz, running xp pro.
purchased a maddog 16x external dvd burner with nero oem 6 software
my usb port is 1.1 , not 2.0
used sony 4x compatible discs.
loaded about 4g of music files, folders by artist, and then subfolders by album, from about 50 or so encoded cd's. i didnt try wma files that i have from napster nor indiv mp3 files from a phatnoise library.
the folders loaded up into the nero app in about 11 mins, then the 'burning process' was begun. the app sat there at the 1% level for at least 30 mins.
after aborting, i even uninstalled and reinstalled all software and hardware and redid the whole process and the same result. before i pack this box up and get a refund, is it that my equip is inadequate to the task? or other issue? has anyone been successful with similar setup? thanks for any comments.

You seem to be on the right track (no pun intended).
If Nero is hanging, then it's probably trying to read all of the files prior to burining them, which points to a memory problem (not enough of it), or a processor problem (not fast enough swapping info to/from memory), or a combination of both.
I suggest you attempt to burn a smaller amount of info to a DVD first, say, 1gig (maybe less), just to be certain that you are ABLE to burn a DVD MP3. If you are able to burn a smaller amount of data, then Memory is definately your problem.
You can trying playing with your "Virtual Memory" settings under [My Computer], [Properties], [Advanced], [Performance, Settings], [Advanced], [Virtual Memory, Change]. Also, make sure you have enough free disk space, if you're burning 4gigs, it'll probably help to have an EXTRA 4gigs available on the drive where the files are.
Also, visit the DELL site and upgrade the BIOS (Flash bios) to the latest version for your model PC, earlier BIOS' had issues burning DVDs.
Finally (perhaps you should do this first), ensure that your hardware is compatibe with the software (NERO) and that you're running the latest available version of your the product; while you're at it, ensure that you have the latest Microsoft patches installed (many software vendors "fix" bugs in their products which often times are hardware specific).
The best thing you could probably do though, is get more memory.

I've used Nero in the past and it hung at this step when I put the incorrect media in the burner.
Good luck

miguk i will follow your advice.
gohorns i used dvd-r. the maddog burner takes all those types i believe.
i'll try again over the w/e and report back.
thanks , j.
I am wondering if not all 2005's have DVD drive in the COMAND?

I did everything with Nero 6 Ultra edition. I first used the "rip CD tracks" utility to convert the CD tracks to MP3 format, using a low-compression setting to preserve sound quality. I then used the Burning ROM utility to make an ISO data disc from the resulting .MP3 files. DVD+, -, R or RW discs should all work.
I have to doubt that your hardware is the primary problem. I've successfully burned DVDs on my second computer, an ancient Dell XPS T500 with a 1.4 GHz Celeron processor, 512 MB of memory and Windows 98 SE. I'd make sure that your Nero can recognize your burner - check their web site for any updates and a list of which software versions recognize which hardware.
I do have to say, though, that it's been my experience that non-mainstream "bargain" brands such as your burner have more than their share of compatibility issues, and the fact that it's an external burner compounds problems you may have. FWIW, I'm currently running a Dell Dimension 8300 w/3.4 GHz processor, 1 GB of memory, a LiteOn internal burner that I installed and XP Pro.
Good luck. Don't give up - it'll be worth it in the end!

Initially I couldn't play mp3s from CD or DVD.
After interogating the forums I got a software up grade which allows me to play mp3s from a DVD in the DVD slot.
Here's the interesting part - I've just burned 3 DVDs - same brand disc, Nero, same files and folders on each disc, and the first 2 didn't work. One was burned as DVD data and the other as DVD mp3 - both burned at 4 times speed. (I think in ISO but I cannot find that setting - anyway I didn't change it (I've read that some people use joliet setting)). I just burned a disc at 2 times speed and it works perfectly.
I think the player is just fickle and suggest saving the compilation and burning a few discs at different speed etc. Write down what you did for each disc and see how you go. Maybe better media cuts down the waste?
My 2 cents worth.

In talking with engineers a while ago, I heard there was a "lower cost" COMAND variant. I'm thinking this might be it.
(Apparently MB is quite sensitive about anything being called "low cost", so they may have another name for it, although they do use that term for the redesigned Tele-Aid platform.)

You can try also to add USB2 card ($11), because USB 1 will definitely issue buffer underrun even on x1 speed. I do not know how Nero+drive can handle that.
