E320 CDI 4MATIC On The Way
Article dated 5/18/2005 indicates an E320 CDI 4MATIC is on the way, and also a stronger E420 CDI with 314hp, 730 NM (540 lb-ft) torque, with a 7-speed trans....what a BEAST!
Hopefully these cars will wash ashore here in the US.
Mine would be the 420, don't need the 4MATIC in our climate, only snows a few times a year, in which case I have in the stable an old Bronco and a stout 2500 3/4-ton 4x4 Suburban that is un-stoppable.

Exactly the problem, 4x4s do not stop any better than 4x2s (un-stoppable)!
Sorry, I had to say that, having spent time in regions where flurries is essentially anything up to a foot we always got a laugh out of the news footage from Virginia/DC area when it snowed. No offense intended, I'm taking you literally on purpose...with TCS turned off my E500 can't move in a straight line in just a couple of inches of the white stuff even with Dunlop WinterSports (this thing calls for a REAL limited slip rear).
Ok, to the point, Great news article, I also hope we see some more diesels coming here, especially the estate. I *hope* they were just waiting to bring a CDI 4matic, which would make a lot of sense.

(I use the Syncro Westfalia for snow, but I reaped the consequences of off-roading over the weekend, and now have to call the body shop for it.)
I think a CDI 4MATIC is the perfect car. The only thing I'd like as much as one of those is a Gibbs Aquada.
The CDI 4MATIC will only be available with the brand-new V6 engine.
If the E420 CDI twin-turbo V8 shows up stateside, it already has some time on the market, in European markets.
I like straight-six engines over V6 engines, so I won't trade. If I do, it would be for the E420 CDI or the BMW 535d twin-turbo I6 slated for the US in 2007 when ULSD is available here.
