Trunk lid question

Hi,

I went to the grocery store the other day in my dad's mercedes. I pushed the button to pop the trunk and it opened up by itself without me going over to it and lifting the lid open. Does anyone know the device or devices that after you pop the trunk, allows the lid to extend open completely?

I’m looking to add this to my car. After I pop the trunk, it just sits there and waits for me to lift it open.

The W211, or at least the W211 without the trunk closer, uses plain old springs to lift the trunk after it's electrically popped. It's not unlike the mechanism of an old-style tilt-up garage door, except that the W211 springs are mounted horizontally and are of course smaller than garage door springs. The trunk lid is aluminum. My old Datsun lifts its lid with a sort of torsion bar arrangement using two metal rods. I have no idea what sort of mechanism would work in your car.

you really should post what kind of car you have if you have a question about it. Assuming you have a Mercedes or another premium car, you may be able to adjust the spring tension on each side of the hinge... just unclip the carpet and look for adjacent holes where the springs hook on to the bracket. I did this with my W203 and it made it go all the way up.

if you have a Honda/Subaru/etc with torsion rods, ask the dealer's parts department to see if they have the tension rods for the factory optional trunk spoiler.

Hi, thanks for replying to my inquiry. I have no clue what you said, so I took four pictures of my trunk.

The first and last picture is of the right side without the black pumpy thing. I took it off so you can see the hinge.

Trunk opener springs

Here's two pictures that show the spring that lifts the trunk in the W211. I don't think you will be able to duplicate this setup for the car pictured in your post above.

....

Needing2Know,
You need to purchase new black pumpy things. When you go to the parts department, you should tell them the model and year of your car and ask for replacement gas struts for the trunk lid. If you go there in the morning and ask for black pumpy things, they may look at you funny and ask what the hell you are talking about. But if you ask the same question later in the day they may just roll their eyes and pretend to be busy doing something else.
Good luck!
(you'll need it)

Well thanks for the help. People on the other chat forum that is that make of my car, just told me to lift weights. LOL

BTW EDDIE, I'm calling them "black pumpy things" because I've seen them labeled different titles:

-Gas Shocks
-Gas Springs
-Gas charged Prop
-Damper
-Gas lift Struts
-Hatch Supports

In a year or so, I'm thinking about getting an E class with Keyless go and parting from my over priced asian car.

HOH, I was thinking the same thing and thanks. "Dad's Mercedes" and the rear is a ricer? This wastes a lot of our knowledgeable and well-intentioned members' time who really do try to help.

Too bad he didn't answer eddie's inquiry as to the model car he's talking about.

What does any of this have to do with W211's?

Let's see, researching your various posts, you've got the Mazda, but apparently the same problem afflicts your C-Class too:

I have a 2002 C240 that just came out of warranty. Today when I went outside to get something out of the trunk, the trunk would not open. I heard the pop sound but it wouldn’t extend open. I had to pull it open and then the trunk lid stayed open. I closed it and attempted to open it again, but it would not. Does anyone know how to fix this problem? If so, what parts do I need to replace?

If you can help me out here with your E-Class question, I have pretty good resources and I'll try to help.

But are you asking about a Mercedes E-Class, your Dad's car, a C-Class or a Mazda?

Yeah, so exactly what is the topic? Get back to us on that. I'm going over the Corvette forums and ask about removing the training wheels from my daughter's bike.

Is it true that Corvette owners know all?

I need the URL for that Corvette forum. Maybe they know something about how to adust that black wiggly thing at the end of the handlebars too. (Hey look, I found a black wiggly thing!)

Since no one answered this question for you: R: read, T: the F: Facking (misspelled so it will not be edited) and M: manual.

I would not have said this, but my father always said these letters to me as I was growing up!

Good luck getting whatever it really is you need to get done.
