pic of the shifter boot...

i am sure you all already knew this but in case someone did'nt, it is the leather "skirt" or boot that is attached to the shifter knob. it appears to be all one piece.

I looked at it, it is one piece indeed. I'm sure you can remove it, the only question always is the price of the conversion.

James, it is great, we aren't disappointed. There is about 3800 miles/6000 kms on the clock now, so the first oil service is soon. After that it's about every 13000 miles/22000 kms I think.
The best qualities are that it's frugal, quiet, comfortable, good handling and strong brakes, reasonably fast given the power.
Option that I enjoy and use the most is Parktronic, lets you park very quickly, safely and in the most efficient way. Love those light indicators on the dashboard/ceiling!
I have an idea that emerged after driving it for a while. Once having driven an automatic I don't see the point of buying a car with manual gearbox, unless it's a real sportscar with 50/50 road-track orientation, like 911, Corvette, Ferrari, etc. Especially in the city. If the rest of the car isn't up to the standard of a proper sportscar (brakes, suspension, steering, etc) then I don't see the point of a manual gearshift. To me it's a bit like putting stiff and lowered suspension on something weak, what's the point? MB is doing a good job of fitting E 55 with auto, they really know what they are doing.
Another thing I cannot imagine is driving a Mercedes with manual gearbox, even though I've read on the board that quite a few of MB owners wished that they could buy their cars with manual boxes. Don't know, for me manual shifter looks really out of place in MB interior.
For me Mercedes is about luxury and comfort above anything else, German Rolls Royce for the people if you like. Even SL 55 or E 55 are still luxury comfort oriented cars to me, they just happen to be very powerful and fast. And they are great as they are.
