Brake pumping and COMAND Display

I've had my 2004 E320 for nearly a year now, and it's been great. Two things annoy me, though.

1. Sometimes, when I'm at low speed, the brake pedal gives this pumping sound and I can feel some pushback in the pedal. I assume this is normal, but I just wanted to make sure. Is this a normal feature for this sedan? It probably happens 1-2x every trip, usually as I'm approaching a red light or leaving a parking space.

2. When I start the car and I had previously listened to a CD track, it always says, "Track 01", even though, say, it's playing the 5th track. As soon as the said track is over, though, it'll correct itself and then display the correct track number. Is this normal?

Thanks.

Question # 2... Is this normal? NO, most other CD players always know where they are.. Is it an occurance in my '04 E500? Yeah it happens a lot.

BTW I had NEVER seen Song titles listed on my Comand's screen, just "Track 1", etc, untill I recorded my own CD at home (using Real Player). I pulled the tracks off of various CD's which had been in my CD changer to boil them down to 1 or 2 CDs. I did it on the computer (which always showed the track titles) and when I played the CD in the single slot CD in the car the Comand showed Titles, and the cluster displayed Track number. Why all of a sudden? I dunno.

Both can be fixed and are described under two Star Bulletins.

The first certainly sounds like the SBC vibration issues. They will need to put in a pulsation damper to fix that. Common and 95% correctable.

The second also was a common problem. A flash of new software will fix that.

That's because when you burn your own CD's, you burned them with CD Text.

Brake pedal feeling the pump = normal.

Don't record labels burn the CD's with the song title on them? I didnt specify the burn to pick up the song titles, they were there so they got picked up. Why doesn't the head unit pick them up off the original CDs & display them then?

Indeed, most do not. None of my 200+ CDs have any CD text.

BTW, burned CDs with added CD text work just fine in our '05 CDI's cd player(s), with none of the "reverting to track 1" which was the original complaint.

Regarding the brake pump, I feel it regularly even in the most innocent of conditions (easily slowly into a parking space, slowing into my driveway).

Is there definitely something amiss here?

Also, should all of my windows (I have the 04 E320 AWD) go up with one touch? 3 of them do, but one doesn't. Trying to figure out if I somehow turned that option off before I take it to the dealership.

Thanks.

P.S. I haven't been here in a long time, but I recall somebody saying that there were some tricks to allow the COMAND display to play DVDs. Can my 2004 E320 AWD play DVDs with some alteration?

The brake system is acting completly normal. Its doing its job by keeping fluid pressure in the system. The SBC brake systems pump will activate about every third or fourth brake application. This is verified by a low pitched "groan" and sometimes a slight vibration felt on the pedal. Its more obvious at low speeds or at a stop, but never felt at speed. Ask your dealer about a in-line damper kit. They will install this free of charge and it works great.

I wonder if it's the SBC system, or something totally related to the CDI fuel injection, but when I turn my key from position 1 to 2, I hear a sound of liquid being squirted (rather loud) for about 1 second, then a bunch of sounds (hydraulic like) emanate from under the hood for a couple of more seconds.. before all goes quiet. The same hydraulic sounds also occasionally occur when I just open the drivers door.

The car is definitely complex compared to your average car.

Noise opening door

Pretty sure that is the hydraulic brake system applying pressure. You have to be very careful changing pads on these new cars. You have to disable the pump first.

Yup.... Brakes are activated (applied) when you open the door. Ya don't want your car to run away do ya???? Another reason why these cars cost so much compaired to the competition.

Any thoughts on my previous two questions?

Thanks for any replies out there.

Sorry to hi-jack your thread..

here is my take on it..

Part 1 is yes, all windows and sun roof should do that! get it fixed.

Part 2 is no.. this is some BS trick on the European version of Command.

Ask Scorchie or MbenzNL in the Audio/Electronics forum. They are experts and can probably answer your questions. You can private message them too.

1. You need SBC damper kit, which should be done when you bring your car for service. But even with damper kit. you will still hear it.

2. There is a software upgrade for the command. Again under service bulletin.
