Are there performance upgrades available for an '05 E320 Diesel?

Suggest that before you spend money on any chip, you do a forum search on "Viesel" and review the problem he had that appeared to be due to an aftermarket mod he installed.

I did some research on Viesel, and actually had communication with him (via this forum), and his problem is not likely related to performance tuning issues, but rather originated with his car before... that said, he used a less than reputable tuning company, which I wouldn't have done.
I used RennTech (along with Brabus, and Kleeman) the only reputable companies tuning MB. RennTech was founded by an ex-AMG guy who's got lots of direct connections with AMG, knows the MB engines and software inside and out. They are conservative in their tuning, and don't promise the world at the risk of your engine.
For $1395 I got an additional 15% more HP, and 10% more torque on my CDI, and with over 1000 miles since the upgrade (Which I did at 300 miles), I have noticed not a single problem in how the car drives. On the contrary, Its faster all around.. more over, my milage has actually gotten better. I got 38.2 mph doing 70mph on the freeway for a stretch of 20 miles (with up and down hill).. not bad..
The CDI is plenty fast without it, but for $1395, I found the upgrade quite noticeable and well worth it.
Renntech 100% warrantees anything that MB will not if the engine has a failure due to their tuning.

I asked that very question, and a lot of it is mainly marketing and a lot is for "drivability"... in the case of the CDI, it's already encroaching on the E500 in 0-60, so to add another 10% would blur that $5000 line... Some engines are not as easily tuned as others, the CDI is one that is, however the E350 or E500 has little gain, as there software is already optimized. Generally turbo engines have more upside..
Apparently they also like to leave room on their engines (this is especially true of Merc and BMW) for their in-house tuning companies like AMG and M to give additional power gains. The fact is, most of these engines are vastly under powered compared to their potential output, and this gives them lots of overhead to add horsepower with future models, while leaving gas milage and emissions at the same or lower levels..
