Speaker upgrade

I have the non HK system and was wondering if anyone had upgraded just the tweeters. To me the mid / bass units sound good but the tweeters are a little harsh. It would be lost easier to replace them rather than the mid / bass units as well. . . . .

Anyone done so / tried / success story (or not?)

I too have asked this and gotten pretty much told that I was "SOL" no easy way to upgrade. Anyone else?? I would love to be wrong.

...we have already done some HK upgrades in several MB models...the HK upgrade can be done in a W211 as well...but might cost more then when going with something aftermarket...it all depends on what you prefer.

Well what is the cost of the upgrade to HK for the W211, and what kind of labor can one expect in hours? Does the upgrade come with HK speaker covers?

Also, what is involved in installing the folding mirrors as far as labor is concerned, and is the ECU/computer configured easily for them to work as per factory installation?

approx 2000USD...1 day of labor...those are not covers but just badges and yes those are included...1 to 2 hour(s) of labor and fairly easy to versioncode

Ouch $2000 + 1 Day?? not feasible.

The mirrors are a different story.. do they come painted? Can you get brand new Platinum Blue?

greetingz,
$2000.00 for the full HK system after the fact is a great deal... For those that can afford it it is a great upgrade.

nah...you just need to get your hands on cheap labor...I 've hard that it travels around.

The mirror covers of your car will stay with your car when doing the power folding mirrors...the covers don't change

I jsut picked up a 2003 E320 Sport w/o the H/K system. Honestly I cannot believe how bad the speakers start bottoming out at loud volumes. I cranked the stereo in every Benz I have owned and never had distortion like this.

I am actively watching this thread for ideas.

I agree. It sounds *great* at low(ish) volume, but when you crank it a bit, it gets ugly fast.

[showing my e-class audio ignorance]

In previous MBs, I have just swapped out the speakers for something like A.D.S or MB Quart speakers. Does the e-class have some specific type of audio wiring which prevents this?

The harmon kardon system sounds great. Its like having a symphony in your car.

Especially when listening to a CD or satellite radio. Very crisp and clean sounding.

I am totally stoked! Steve just ordered the HK total system and will install it along with my PTS and folding mirrors when he's out here!

That stock system is disgraceful for a $55K car... MB needs to make HK standard (and pass on their cost).

for $55K you (US) already get a lot of car...we can barely get a C-class in classic trim for $55K...I wish the cars in europe were as cheap as they are in the US...tax sucks

You pay that much in taxes? Sounds like oppressive socialism to me. (m)

greetingz,
Or worse. How does your Government get away with outright stealing from its citizens? Is the concept of "personal responsibility" as alien there as it is becoming here in the US?

I used to be TOTALLY opposed to socialism and the whole concept.. and while I am still against socialism on a full scale, there are two industries that I think can work better under it..

-Air transport
-Medical

both are VERY capital intensive.

His country may nail him with massive taxes and he may pay a lot for a car, house etc.. but he doesn't have to save 10-15% of his income for his retirement the way we do here.. he's got good medical, and a decent pension when he retires. If anything, the thing that's harming his countries social programs are the massive amounts of low wage immigrants that they are having to digest and support. That is a mistake that many European nations made, and now their social programs are suffering for them.

correct me if I'm wrong Steve...

Air Canada is a mess here and I think that is still gov't run.. (I may be wrong).

Our health system here is AMAZING.. No medical bills of any kind for all CDN's. It is great.. Some here want a system like the US, blows my mind..

medical care is great - but as I am self employed, the rest still sucks...I do not get a pension.
For people who are not self employed our country is great...no matter wether you are sick, working or even unemployed - you always get paid.

Air Canada is in much better shape than AMR, UAL, and DAL, trust me.

Steve: Then make sure you save up that 10-15%!
