Whine when steering

Whine when steering

OK, I've been having this problem for a few weeks now. After the car is sitting for a long period of time (whether in the morning, or even if it is just 4-8 hours of sitting), I get a whining noise when I turn the steering wheel. It goes away after the car warms up some, though.

I'll be going to the dealer soon anyway (I got in a little fender bender

), but wanted to see if anyone else experienced this and what it might be.

In the olden days when I could actually do meaningful work on a car, I woulda thought what you're describing was a loose power steering belt.

Low PS fluid causing the pump gears to suck air and make noise. As it heats up, fluid expands and no more air and no more noise.

I had something very similar last year. They replaced both seals and the sealing ring at the connection. I haven't had any problems since. The part numbers were:

027-997-95-48 SEAL (2)

005-997-76-40 SEAL RING (1)

I had this problem a while ago. It started the way you describe, and then it gradually got worse over time. I recall that it was some kind of small leak involving the steering mechanism, but I don't know that it was power steering fluid. for some reason I think it may have had something to do with the ball joints. Anyway, when I drove into my MB dealer, they recognized the sound right away and took care of the problem.
