Seat belt warning - passenger side
I just picked up a 05 E500 last week. If I put a 12 pack in the passenger seat, it seems to detect a passenger and flashs the red seat belt icon and starts dinging, slowly then crescendoing to a rapid ding, all while the SRS airbag light indicates that it is off / no passenger detected. It will turn off if the passenger side seat belt is fastened.
Any insight? Put beer in trunk? Just seems odd.
Thanks,
Steve

Steve, what you wrote reminds of a doctor joke, where the patient tells the doctor that it hurts when he does a funny motion with his arm. He asks the doctor what he should do. The doctor tells the patient not to do that with his arm.
On a more serious note, I remember reading about someone here on the board that hated the continuous seat belt dinging, since he didn't want to wear a seat belt. The dealership deactivated it for him. Do a search and you will likely find it.

yeah, it wouldn't be necessary to put the 12 pack on the seat, when you can easily put it on the floor or even the trunk. I actually try not to put anything other than a human in the seat. after all you don't want anything to ruin your leather.
Most dealers won't deactivate the chime, due to the safety issue. I actually had a defect in mine. When the passenger would get out of the car, the chime would come on and would not turn off, even though no one was in the passenger seat anymore. I had the sensor adjusted and it works fine now.

Just had my car serviced 1yr. Same problem. (Except wasn't 12pk was my bag they take your car with a DWI in NY-ouch)
They can fix that. The service advisor said that they raised the threshold weight setting. My works well now. Only when a true passenger in seat.

Front seat sensor too sensitive - I think older posts mentioned 9-15lbs that this can be set for but mine goes off even with just my laptop in the seat. I just think it's one of those quirks and it keeps me from piling useless junk on the passenger side.

Jack Russell
I had an 05 SL600 and now an 06 SL600, in the 06 SL600 my 13 pound Jack Russell Terrier causes the seat belt sensor to go off when he is in the passenger seat.

Thanks!
Thanks Sunman, Falcon 7, and StevenK!
I will get my tech to check out the sensor system next time I take it in. It sounds like it is set on the low side.
StevenK, you must really love your dog to let him ride in your SL!! I have a 90 lb. female shephard that would just lovo to shed in my car, she gets to ride in our explorer.

Shed
My dog sure does shed, that is part of the reason why I picked the stone interior with his white and brown hair, the black interior would have been a mess.
It always amazes me that people say stone is harder to keep clean that black interior. I don't see that at all, you can see everything on black leather and black carpeting. Not nearly as visible on the stone.
