W211 standard glass/windshield info wanted..
Just got a rock chipped w/s replaced today with OEM MB part ordered thru a local dealer using my VIN..
The w/s they took of had PPG - Solargreen (R) on it, while the new w/s had Saint-Gobain-Sekurit
The w/s removed had a circle with an E12 inside, and the w/s added was E2
also, the REST of my windows on the car are made by Saint-Gobain-Sekurit..
Does this mean my care came from the dealer with a replaced w/s? Or more likely, that MB has multiple vendors and they happend to put this miss matched w/s on my car? OR what I fear... the PPG is a better glass?
What do you other W211 owners have all around your car... would you mind going out to the garage and looking?
Thanks, and I await your replies..

Mercedes might have replaced the windshield at the port where the car came in, since it could have been damaged. I actually find the Saint-Gobain Sekurit glass to be much better than the PPG glass.

Just for you, I went ahead and crawl around my tight garage to check both the E500 and SLK350 ...
The verdict is that they are all Saint-Gobain Sekurit glass, every single panel.
For the E500, only the front w/s is E2 while all the rest are E1.
In the case of the SLK350, the front and two rear small glasses are E2 while the rest are E1.
Hope this helps

Funny you should ask.. I was actually scheduled to this yesterday, but sent them back to get the sticker from the Dealer.. So they did, and applied it in front of me (for my approval). I'm a real pain, I know!

FYI, My 05 E320 4M has the S-G-S glass all around. Its certainly possible that MB has more than one supplier for their components. I am scratching my head as to a comment earlier on this thread that the S-G-S is better than PPG. How do you know?? Did you test both is a lab?? My thoughts are that MB has them made to meet specs that they developed and they both should be the same.

Because of the laminated structure of windshields, they all block UV. Thats why Photochromic eye glass lenses don't turn dark inside the car. (And they lighten as soon as you get in & drive) Its not the brightness of daylight that causes them to darken. Its the amount of UV that hits them that determines their darkness. All photochromic lenses get darker in cold weather than in warm.

Not sure what OEM glass my windshield is made of, but it stinks! I have less than 7K miles, and already have 3 significant chips in it. I drive my other cars on the same roads and drive them more than the E500, and they have no chips in the glass.
One or even two chips might be coincidental, but not three chips. The OEM glass sure seems to chip easily, at least in my case.

I paid $0, as my insurance has an unlimited claim writer for w/s here in AZ (State law).
