comparing apples to apples

Came across this interesting Consumer Guide info on the E class vs. rival Lexus GS..

http://auto.consumerguide.com/Auto/N.../Act/Roadtest/

http://auto.consumerguide.com/Auto/N.../Act/Roadtest/

The LS edged out the S class 78 vs 72 total score.. but the real story is the E's performance and review vs it's rival.. what say yee.. rjm?

Makes me feel proud of what I own compared to the Toyota based products. Plus I know that my family will be safe and secure driving around in a tank thats fun to drive.

GS430 got 0-60 in just under 7 seconds....wow. I thought it is suppose to be 5.7 sec like Lexus claims on their web site. Looks like Lexus over boosted their acceleration times just like they did on HP ratings. The LS now has 278hp and GS has 300...I wonder where they got the extra 28 hp from.

I know my second generation GS430 does it in 6 seconds and it's the same engine.

FYI. These articles were written by Consumer Guide, not Consumer Reports - two differnet firms.

you're right, I'll edit the post.. They put out those auto buyer guides that you see at the book stores.

lexus gears their cars for acceleration needs of the US market, so 0-60 is grear for the hp of the car.. but take it on the track, or autobahn and an MB (even a diesel like mine) can leave it in the dust after 100mph. auto gearing is a big overlooked variable when people look at hp/torque figures.

Consumer Reports Did Review the E320

The actual Consumer Reports comparison on the E320 was published in June, 2004 and reviewed the BMW 530i, Jaguar S-Type and Volvo S80. The article was called “Flawed Gems.” The MB came out on top but with reservations.

They said “the Mercedes-Benz E320 . . . had the highest overall score in this group and is ranked among the best we’ve tested. It delivers a supremely comfortable ride, agile handling, quick acceleration, and a quiet cabin.”

Even though it came out on top, they would not recommend the E320 because of the poor reliability history. Let’s hope things have changed!

I don't think Consumer's Guide actually tests ANYTHING. They just summarize Info they get from other sources and add thier opinion. Forgetaboutit.

The best is Auto und Sport but it's in German. Auto und Sport actually crash test cars.

Doesn't the e-class (211) have a "boron" metal cage surrounding the occupants (for safety)? I thought I read that somewhere.

I'm going to write up a report for the fellas (and girls) on here on both my 2002 Lexus GS300 and 2002 MB E320. I'll tell it how I see it. Both have flaws, both have cool features.

In the meantime, I will be on my John Deere riding lawnmower contemplating how to get rid of the gopher in my horse pasture area...little F'er.
