Try This
When you have 5 minutes spare give this a go and post your results.

I have tried it and it does drive better after settling in again.

I have been wondering about it. I asked my SA about something like this and he responded that the car is "constantly adapting" which I think is BS. I want to try this out as soon as I get in my car. So do I have to keep it under 80 like the manual says to do in the learning or break-in period?

The car is constantly adapting. That procedure takes a couple of minutes to do and the transmission will revert back in a couple of minutes of granny mode driving. It’s faster and easy to do 5 quick stabs on the gas to get things going again after being in slow traffic.

I decided to try this when I was stuck at a railroad crossing. I had plenty of time to do it. I did notice that the car was a bit more hyper and responsive. However, I had no problem making the car shift at the exact same RPMs I usually make it shift. I am certain that there was a bit of a difference, but I wonder why? I really did not notice a reduction in economy either.

What do you mean?
I found that when accelerating, even after driving slow for a few days. I can get the transmission to shift right when I barely release my foot off the pedal and even after it shifts I can give it quite a bit of throttle without it downshift. This transmission is very easy to control and I love it.
Bud, I really don't know what throttle response you are talking about. I know that you had mentioned about the gear the transmission is in after you complete a turn. I can make my transmission be in either 3rd or 2nd gear just by the difference in throttle position. It is smooth. I am certain that even though we both have E320s there is a difference since mine is a 4-matic, but at least at this altitude the smoothness and agility of this power train is significantly improved over my beloved 300E. Did you try this? Did you notice a difference?

I'll have to give this a try. I do a lot of commuting on "back roads", which around here can actually be posted with 50-55mph limits (but my weekly average is only 33MPH). Only problem is that when holding that speed steady for long stretches, and then rolling through some of the towns, the tranny becomes slow to react. After months of it the tranny and secondary intake stage seem VERY slow to react (relatively speaking).
One time while waiting for a gas fill up in NJ (they don't let you pump your own) I was playing with one of the resets sequences, can't figure out what I did but it was like I rebooted the car! Dash indicates flashed, seat bolsters went through a sequence, and after that the transmission was much more responsive on the ride home.
Thanks for the tip!

As for the shifting, the 300E has four speeds. When I go around corners in my neighborhood, it downshifts one gear. With the E320, it drops down two gears. That's a lower (higher numerical) gear ratio and I don't like it.
The E320 is a fantastic highway car but the brakes are not as smooth at slow speeds as the 300E and the throttle wasn't as immediate as with the 300E. Now it's improved.
I suppose I also don't like the coarse sound of the V6 and the loss of quality in everything from switch gear to leather to carpeting. I know something has to give to keep the price down because the MSRP on the E320 wasn't much more than it was on my 14 year old 300E.
BTW, the E320 is the best highway car I've ever owned or driven and the seats are also outstanding.

The adaptive transmission is designed to adjust the gear changing to reflect the current mode of driving and also help with gas consumption. Easy driving will result in gentle smooth upshifts and higher mpg while spirited driving will incur downshifts and using more gas. It doesn't take too long to adjust. I can get the quick downshifts back by alternating between 5 quick bursts and easing up a bit.

Do you guys think having it in Sports mode I or II affects the transmission? I have always wondered if those settings affect any other settings on the car..

tired it as well. I initially thought it might be wishful thinking, but my wife commented on how the car was behaving it self more (not changing up a 1mph and actually making it up a hill without serious gas peddle prods) which confirms the test.

Got caught up on this thred, grew curious, and went into my garage to do the procedure. I didn't turn the engine on after the 2 minutes but I'm assuming it still worked.
I'll tell you, with the power the E55 has, it's very noticeable in terms of acceleration and ESP control. I did my usual sort-of flooring method to hurl the car which usually triggers ESP, but after this I haven't had it engage once. It seems like the car has more grip to the road, thus resulting in greater acceleration. This could be useful for the rest of the E55 guys, in case you're reading.
Thanks for posting! I knew with how somewhat sluggish my car has been feeling lately that something was being kept back.
I blame my wife for her getting in tune with the car... granny-style.

I tried this and did notice a nominal difference on my E350. After driving it for two days I have also noticed that the gas mileage has gone from ~24 MPG to ~18. Only 100 miles tested. Will keep you posted.

I'll be able to tell on my work commute. My gas mileage has been reaching a pretty stable 20mpg average on my 300 mile per week commute. Of course if the reset works I may be inserting an additional variable...I may be on the loud pedal more

Tried it yesterday... Definitely works!!! Since you spend the first 1k miles "babying the car", I guess the car ends up "learning" the wrong thing. I got a replacement E320 due to the early delivery '03 "nav" problem but I was never happy with the acceleration on the new car compared to the old one. This has definitely fixed that problem. Thanks for the post!

Tried it last week and I can feel the difference for sure, but it soon adapted to my calm driving style (baby boy in the car).
