Pay Attention At The Gas Pump

My son related this story to me this morning. His business partner drives a 2005 CDI Diesel. Last week on his way to work he was running late and in a hurry but his tank was almost empty. He stopped at a self-serve station and while making a cellphone call (big mistake) he rapidly filled his car, grabbed his credit card receipt and took off. His car made it to the street, when it made a very loud noise and completely died. Coming back to reality, he checked his credit card receipt and realized he had just filled up with Regular Gasoline! He called the Mercedes garage, had the car towed in and they drained the tank and replaced some filters and other components, and after several hours and a $1000 repair bill, was on his way. Of course, it was not covered under warranty so it turned out to be a very expensive fill-up. Be careful at the pump and watch what you are doing! I have grabbed the wrong hose before and tried to put diesel in my gas tank, but thank God, the diesel nozzle was too big to fit in the tank. Guess it pays to pay attention!

Funny.. Most of the gas stations here put the diesel pump in a seperate location (for truckers I suppose). This should be standard practice.

Diesel nozzle is too big for a gasoline filer neck. Think about the reverse for a minute

The CDI loaner car at Schumacher says right on the outside of the gas cap.. Diesel Only. I asked the dealer if the harm would be serious to the car if it was filled with gas.. he said, it's just a matter of flushing out the ENTIRE system of the Gas... no harm to the engine.. but $1000 sounds about right for that type of a job.

Hey rjm, are you sure he wasn't trying to take advantage of that cheap gas since diesel is sold at usury prices out where you live?

aceman is half right. At my closest station, the diesel pump has 2 different nozzles, depending on which side you're on. One is the standard truck nozzle, which is even too large for my CDI's filler neck, the other is the diesel "for passenger cars" that fits.
