What kind of real world MPG are folks getting with their E350 4-matics and E500 4-matics?

Good question...

I have a 2005 E500 4matic w/ 12000 miles on it, have had it since june 1.

I am driving a 30 mile commute to work, avg time is appx 45 - 50 minutes.
I would say its 60/40 hwy/ctiy.

I have never been below 19mpg, and never been above 21mpg, pretty much always between 19 and 20mpg per tank and i check it habitually.

One thing that you need to keep in mind:

So far, all 4-Matics are 5 speed. The E500 and the E350 that are RWD are now 7 speed. So the new E350 is supposed to be more efficient than the old E320, but not because of the engine, because of the extra 2 gears.

This means though, that the E350 4-Matic WILL use significantly more fuel than the old E320 4-Matic. The E500 4-Matic will also use more fuel due to the loss of two gears. I have otherwise found the extra weight and resistance of the 4-Matic system does not really make much of a difference.

I have noticed however, that the new ML that uses a almost identical AWD system and has now come out with a 7-speed transmission, so I guess that it will only be a matter of time before the sedans have a 7-speed.

So far you might have seen that my E320 4-M has already averaged about 31 MPG on highway trips and about 21 MPGs in true city driving (little trips of about 2 miles). This E is significantly more powerful and efficient, in spite of being AWD, than my old 300E.

I know I did not answer your question, but I hope this explains some of the MPG differences.

04 E500 4matic, 7500 miles

19-22 highway, 15 - 17 city, I don't let any grass grow under my feet when I'm on the Interstate, 80 - 88 MPH. Speeding fines in my neck of the woods are quite significant at 90MPH and above+.

Hope this helps.....Bill
