and if you think i'm being anti-mercedes, OF COURSE EVERYONE SHOULD BE! think about it.
If i had a rolex and they weren't accurate as much as a seiko, shame on you!!!
and those of you who say GERMAN cars are overall better than JAPANESE CARS. well you haven't seen the NISSAN GTR, it has a huge screen where you can see the GEAR RATIOS, acceleration, G's etc........ WOW look at in CNET.com
NOW THAT IS PUTTING SHAME TO ///AMG and /M series.

Sure, Japan landed to the moon in early 50s of previous century. Currently Mazda space vehicle is cruising roads of Mars. And US designed iPhone doesn't even have voice dial, which my $5 Kyocera phone does.

Lets keep our eye on the ball, people. Yes, the MB system is not as good as some of the Japanese systems. But they have their quirks too. Lexus won't let you enter a destination while moving (at least not in my friends LX460); the touch screen gets dirty and smudged. Both systems will get you to where you want to go --- but in the Lexus, you have to go in the Lexus! I'd rather be driving my MB; the Lexus reminds me of old style Cadillacs -- very luxurious but not a fun car to drive. The best Nav system I have seen is actually a Garmin Nuvi. If I put one in a Toyota or a Kia I will have a car with a terrific nav system, but not so terrific car. Point is, the car comes first in the buying decision, then the nav.
By the way, BMW isn't much better (more detail on maps, but very quirky controls.
Just my 2 cents.

Have a CLK with COMAND NAV, and a Garmin Zumo 550 for my bike and my truck (it came with both a bike mount and a car mount). In every respect except for the fact that it is not integrated, the Garmin is superior. It's faster, more accurate, better routing, easier to use, better resolution, easier to update, more features (it has better bluetooth than any MB car built in). I also just test drove a C300 this past weekend. The Nav in the C300 is much better than that in the E, CLK, or S, and the voice command is pretty slick. Other than the voice comand, the Garmin nav portion is still a bit better, but at least MB is starting to get it right.

NO ROLEX is as accurate as any Seiko. Sad but true. a simple, cheap Quartz watch movement is more accurate than a "self winding" Rolex.
But no Seiko has the class or style of ANY ROLEX

The German are not thinking, and the Japanese are smartest people on this planet that's why.

Since this got a bit off topic, this is from a European company:

They claim this being available for some cities but I wonder when there would be a device with sufficient graphics capabilities and enough hard disk space.

clearly the engineers are not performing usage testing. It's not just the nav system but the entire tech package. the honda/acura/lexus is far superior. BTW Whose idea was it to put the iphone charger in the glove compartment? WTF thought I was getting top of the line vehicle.

The Nav is pretty bad but I have seen worse. The thing that annoys me is I dont understand why I cant just say the address instead of giving it city... then street... then number. I should just be able to say 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue Washington DC.

Why not the ability to enter a zip code? ...but boy this is an old thread... The OP doesn't even have his car anymore... and MB now has a modern day NAV in the 212's.

I've got an '09. This may be an old thread ..but the nav system still stinks. My husband is taking my car camping . He is going to have to buy a gps system to find the camp site. Never had this issue with the Acura.

European maps have all possible small roads included, perhaps you should. But for some odd reason the first NTG2.5 units had a lot older map data than the older Comand APS with equally fresh maps. Sounds odd if this was the case in the US too.
I agree they should really put all the roads the map supplier can offer to the DVD.

Maybe you did, but I sure as hell didn’t, lol.
I hated getting lost, pulling over to ask for directions, pulling over the try to find my location on a map, and not being able to figure out where the hell I was... It was a pure HELL! Oh and not to mention Dating, don’t want to sound sexist but getting directions from women was HELL. Dating got so much better when I was able to say "just give me your address and I will be there.

Don't forget that back then you could pull into any gas station and ask the guy with the baseball cap and bow tie who was pumping gas, checking the oil & cleaning the windshields for directions, and he would tell you with a smile... instead of the surly people in the "convienience store" crammed into a former service bay who apparently can get to work every day but have absolutely no clue where anything in the neighborhood is except for the lottery tickets and the cigarettes.
I'll take the NAV system any day.

Of course I enjoy all modern conveniences and was only joking. I'm far from being a Luddite. But I did survive in the past and my life was still very, very pleasant.
On the other hand, we can quickly get spoiled with electronic conveniences and the downside to that is we can become too attached to them. By that I mean if all of a sudden we don't have them, or they don't work correctly, it then adds nothing but frustration to our lives. Hence this thread. Like taking drugs away from an addict.
fwiw, I really, really enjoy my 993 Porsche w/o all the modern electronics. Sure, I might miss them but instead I focus on driving. But it's kind of revelatory driving that car.
I went for a 10 mile hike in the mountains yesterday with no cell phone, iPod, etc.. No high tech Chinese-made hiking shoes, and just a bottle of water. It was one of the best days I've had in a long time.

Huh?
With that Abrams in your posts, you ought to know better than to post that best technology stuff. Remember what an utter shock the T34 (made by those inferior commie Slav *******s and operated by inferior commie Slav ******* tankers) was to the Germans? How the German army simply wanted to copy it, it was so superior to German tanks? Remember the Ferdinand/Elefant that they did not even mount a machine gun on...so that it was a sitting duck against infantry attack at Kursk? Remember how when a German tank broke or was damaged in the field, it was mostly abandoned because it had been designed to be fiendishly difficult to repair in the field?
Actually, I think over-engineering and under-designing is still something that plagues German cars. Witness the pathetic repair records of essentially all German cars in recent times. I think that is improving...sure hope so.
As for the NAV in W211's, so chief engineer had to sign off on that piece of crap. It would NOT cost anymore to put in a proper unit...that was being done in mid-price cars already. They simply did not care.

don't blame them... the German Engineer is legendary for his abilities. That country almost ruled the world had it not been for their small resources.. and at the end of that war, they had the most advanced technology in the world for the most part (which is why the majority of German scientists/engineers were sent to US and Russia)..
Blame the idiots in the marketing and finance departments that are trying to run this 120 year old icon of automotive production like a division of GM..
