Question Whining Noise

I have a 2004 E320 and tonight after putting it to bed, I went out in the garage and heard this whining type noise, took me 10 minutes to find out which car was causing it but needless to say it was the Mercedes and not the Infiniti. Anycase, the car is off and this noise is coming from under the hood toward on the drivers side near the engine. I have this feeling that if I go to service they will never hear it so has anyone else ever had such a noise and does it lead into a problem?. Not sure if whining is the best discriptive work but I can't think of another.

Thanks
John

Funny,

I posted the exact same question/subject a few months back. Its your SBC. Its like a low level hummmmmm.
Try locking / unlocking the car or opening / closing a door and it shuts off if you happen to be within earshot and its bothering you.

Did you actually hear the noise continuously for 10 minutes? I've never heard the SBC pump to run for more than a few seconds at a time, and I would call the SBC sound more of a "buzz" or a "hum" than a whining sound. I don't know if the W211 has an auxiliary fan that runs after the car is shut off (don't recall ever hearing one) but if it has one, it probably wouldn't run for 10 minutes at this time of year. If you get a repeat performance from your car, I would ask the dealer what it is.

May be an electric coolant recirc pump to ease cool down. The ML had this in the W163 series and it was audible. I do not hear it in my 05 W211 or, did not hear it in the W210 that I had.

The W211 has the aux. cooling pump right in front of the SBC unit and directly behind the passenger headlight. That could be the source of the noise, which is normal. The only other noise I have seen in that area of the car after shutdown could possibly be the alarm siren but it makes more of a chirping sound. It could buzz when the internal battery is getting very weak, but most likely you would have noticed the alarm going berzerk before it got to that stage.
