Different gearing...
Euro CDI's geared 2.47:1 if I remember correctly, and US cars geared 2.68:1.
So at any given speed and gear, the Euro car will need 92% of the RPM's of the US car. So if the Euro car needs 3200 RPM's to go 120, the US car would need 1.09 times that, or close to 3500 RPM. At 150 MPH, you're looking at close to 4400 RPM's for the US car (if speed limiter were to be disabled). Not too good for the connecting rods to stay at that speed very long! Euro spec would be 4000 RPM's @150 MPH.
So the Euro spec cars are pretty much easy-cruisin up to about 140, beyond that should be left to the AMG crowd.
Go to http://www.ring-pinion.com/content/calculators/RPM.asp
Neat free calculator for RPM's, etc..
PS my CDI has seen 125 and was still pulling. Very planted. No fluttering or other bad traits.
Too many cops (and deer) around here, and they have helicopters and even fixed-wing Cessnas on patrol here.

Heck i am looking forward to the speed cameras. speed cameras= less highway patrol with radar. then i can go out and buy a $20 plate cover so the cameras cant get my plate, and with the $20 i just rendered millions of dollars worth of tech unless and can now go even faster on the 101 without having to worry about a real cop down the road with a radar gun. I will just need a new pair of sunglasses for night time since the dam flashes from the cameras will be annoying.

Flashing cameras, OH YES!
Here is a souvenir that I got when I lived in Germany. One disadvantage of cameras is that they really stick to the tolerance that they are set to. I was 1Km/Hr over their maximum! 6.7 Miles per hour over the speed limit. The fine actually does not go towards or against my Euro license anyway and it was only about $30.00. I think it was worth it just to get this cool picture of me. Also, if my seatbelt had not been on the fine would have been huge! But no worries here since I always have mine on, even when I move my cars out of the garage I find myself with my seatbelt on .
This brings back great old memories of Germany, fast cars and no speed limits (only in some parts) and HUGE bills at the pump!.
Note my passenger was not on the picture. They stopped putting the picture of the passengers in Germany since spouses were opening the mail at home and then seeing their husbands with “the other woman” in the front seat of their car! These traffic cameras cause a few divorces in Germany!

115-120 mph on Highway 97 in rural Oregon. I was stuck behind five, count-'em, five semis in a row. A long, slightly uphill straight stretch with no oncoming traffic opened up. Starting at maybe 50 mph, I floored it and kept it floored. I was watching the approaching crest of the rise and the trucks on the right and didn't realize just how fast I was going until I cleared the first truck in line and glanced down at the speedo. I realized that I passed the last two trucks really fast, but if I had guessed how fast I was going without reference to the speedo, I would have guessed maybe 90. Nothing else - not noise, not vibration, not anything but the speedo - would have clued me that I was going as fast as I was.

Sweet jambalaya, a man after my own heart! I love it! I have been known to have a few of those type covers myself.
Don't forget to smile.

What if they put embedded RFID tags in the cars and as you pass certain checkpoint you get caught? That would be freaking scary but I see it happening in the near future.

160-165Mph (post ECU mods) on Highway 85 with my CHP friend driving their unmarked Z28 behind me on a beautiful late Summer Sunday morning back in '99. Hey, he started it! E55 was rock solid and probably had 20-25MPH more in it but I didn't feel like pushing my luck. My friend in the Z28 was 1/4 mile behind, BTW. I take it to 120-130 quite often on certain stretches of Interstate 280 at off peak hours. Clear stretch of 6 lane freeway with no ramps or hiding places. Very quick and easy to do. Last time was on my way to meet CE750 for lunch!

I suspect my 03 E320 is limited to 220kmh. I could feel the car wanting to go faster but it just wouldn't. It was still smooth, steady and noise level was good. I've never dared to take it that fast anymore as the new laws will throw me into jail at that speed (limit 110kmh).

i did a little over 120mph in my e500 going north on the 215 coming home from the pechenga casino and man and even on 35 series tires, I didn't know I was going that fast until I looked left and right. Very low noise. so low that I didn't even hear anything except my friend's snoring and my cd playing.
