Defroster button

My friend has 2005 E-500 and when he turns the defroster mode on (for foggy windows hot air with A/C starts blowing on max) He can control the speed of the fan.

When I do it on my 2006 E-500 it just goes to max and I can not control the speed of the fan.

Can you guys post you year and model and tell me if you can contorol the speed of the fan or it just stays on max. Please do not confuse this with "auto" mode.

'06 E350 - Seems like mine does MAX only. I'll double check tonight but I was thinking the same thing the few times I used it: "Why can I NOT adjust the fan speed???!!"

My guess is MB want you to see through the windshield ASAP.

Beside somewhat noisy, it did clear up the windsheld pretty darn fast.

Well that is what i thought, but my friends e-500, 2005 does it and he had a rental e-350, 2006 and it did it too. That is why this came up. What I want to find out how is it designed to work and how many people have it the way i do - can not control the fan speed.

thanks.

Defroster Fan

I had a '99 E320--could not lower the fan speed when using the defrost mode. When I got my '03 E500, was happily surprised that I could slow down the fan. It does staqrt on HI, but I can lower it to about 1/2 way.

I also have full control over the fan speed from the highest setting to the lowest. Make sure your pressing the smaller fan icon and not the larger one..... I also notice when the defroster is activated it leaves the auto mode and goes to manual.

It's a European regulation that cars must have a "max defrost" setting that's easy to obtain. That's what the defrost button is for. That's all it's for.

Otherwise, just use "auto" or use the contol wheel on manual to adjust where air goes and adjust fan speed.

Yeah i understand that. The thing that I do not get is how come some E allow control and some the same year don't. What I am trying to find out is how is it suppose to be (designed) from the factory?

And one more thing.
When defroster mode is DIactivated A/C still stays on, is that how your cars are?
I also notice that after you diactivate the defroster mode, and diactivate A/C it still blows cold A/C air for about 5 min even though you have the tempruture set at 74.

Max defrost by pushing the defrost, but I can subsequently slow down the fan by pressing fan down.

It only lets me go down to about 60% fan, no slower.

Had fan control, but no longer

My E500 with 12/2004 build dated allowed control of fan speed when in defrost mode until today. I requested that the control module be replaced since the "auto" light on the passenger side was positioned slightly out of level. The misaligned light drove me crazy. MB dealer did not want to try to disassemble the switch to fix it so they ordered a complete a/c control panel. The new panel no longer allows control of the fan speed. Also the display is now in white numbers.

My display was always in white "dot" numbers behind the smoke colored plastic, what color was your original display?
