Brake Pad Wear E320

For you technogeeks, or not, here is a simple way to measure wear on your brake pads. I ordered a Brake Pad Wear Guage for my E320 ( Part # 211 589 06 23 00). I got it from KYBENZ, a forum member. I am not sure if he is still in the business of parts, but the dealer price is around $42. Your dealer may mark it up. Photos are attached.

An interesting thing is that the front pads (Pagid) are considerably larger in depth, than the rear pads( OEM Benz). Photos are attached. The pad on the left is the rear, OEM Benz pad, and it is definitely smaller, with less depth than the front, or right pad (Pagid). This might explain why the rear pads are wearing out faster. If the braking is equal all around because of the SBC, the rears will wear out faster, because they are thinner.

The tool is kind of neat. You just push it into the hole on the caliper and read the wear. No tires have to come off.

For my 2005 E320 CDI, with 10,000 miles, the wear was 13 on both fronts and 9.8 on both rears. When new, the fronts are at 16 and the rears are 11.

When the guage reads 3mm, there isn't much left and you should have gotten a warning. I think it goes off at around 5mm.

This is what you do in Connecticut on a snowy day!!! Enjoy. Jimbo

That looks like a very handy tool. The front brakes on any car perform more stopping action than the rear because of weight transfer under braking. The front rotors are larger than the rear. Because of this, the front pads are usually much larger and thicker than the rear pads. The SBC system does cause the rear brakes to perform more stopping action than other systems so your observation about the rear pads wearing faster is correct.

See, great informative posts and helpful technical sharing makes this forum the greatest place for MB info. Great work guys! I'm buying one. Much better than the all too common *****ing and whining I've been noticing lately.
