HELP WITH TRUNK closer

My trunk closer suddenly stopped working. Both red lights are on so it is getting power but when you push it, it does nothing. The closer and opener inside the car works but the one inside the trunk doesn’t. I have to physically close it which I hope doesn't cause further problems. Any ideas? Thanks

I see you’re at 87000 and out of basic warranty unless you have an extendeed warranty billable labor time (as allowed under warranty) is 1.7 hours.

Thanks, I do have an extended warranty that I hope covers this. I was hoping it might just be a fuse. No such luck. It looks like I am off to the dealer.

LOL! …And who doesn’t understand that the dealer is not only raping the customer, but also MB?

Trunk Closer

The wife's E 320 has been back to the dealers five times for truck closer problems since Nov. 2005. Wire harness worn through and replaced, closer potententiometer replaced, computer codes corrected,& control unit replaced today. All work done under warranty. Each time when accepting the car back from the dealer the trunk functions OK. Today after returning home from the latest attempt to fix, the closer again failed after only three actuations.
Good luck and keep us posted. I'll do the same.

Curious was there any telltale symptoms, any difference in operation experienced before it failed repeatedly?

Trunk Closer

The first problem was no power to the trunk closer switch or lights. This was the result of the wire harness becoming worn thru near the hinge. Open circ. not a short as there were no blown fuse. After repair, a mix of failure modes. Most frequent was partial closure and pop up to full open ,also occasional failure to react to the closer switch. Recal of the position potentiometer an subsequent replacement of the pot. appeared to fix the problem; at least while the car was at the dealership. Latest problem is trunk fails to close when trunck lid switch is activated. This is intermitant, occationally go - mostly no go. Latest "fix" was to replace the control unit. Worked fine at the dealership when I got the car back. On returning home the same old failure mode is back. BTW, the trunk closer works OK when activated by the switch in the drivers door.
I'm thinking that it's in the trunk switch but am reluctant to dig into it my self while the car is still under warranty.

God forbid we educate the dealer, but have you ever suggested replacing the switch to them?

Not yet. Think I'll open the pannel with the switch and see if I can check function with a voltmeter and go from there. There's more to life in retirement than trips to dealer. Even if thy provide free coffee and doughnuts.

Did you ever get a solution to this? I am experiencing the same problem and the dealer is having the same problems.

Thanks,
Bob

power trunk

Yes, they did fix it. The problem was water getting into the power button. You may have noticed after you wash your car, if you shake the trunk a ton of water comes out. That water has a way of getting inside the power trunk connections. The shut button and close button had to be replaced along with the connection harness. This is a design flaw that allows water to get into that area. Once I got my fixed I always shot compressed air in there after a car wash to get it all out. You can also shake your trunk to get it out. I traded the car in a few months ago but never had a problem again.

Unhappy Same Problem

I've been to my dealer 3 times already; first time they changed the trunk switch, and the last time they changed an electronic control unit. I'm still having the problem (pushing the switch more than once), and at times the trunk 'refuses' to shut and I have to force it down. This is an incredibly aggrevating problem.

I've call MBUSA about it to complain, and tomorrow I'll have to go back in again for the 4th time to have it looked at (and a total of six days with the dealership.) My car is only 1.5 months old (E350 2008) - I wish I had known this as I would not have gotten this option.

Can such an issue be cited under the California Lemon Law?

Do you mean you shot air into the red buttons to clear out the water?
