Never both stars -- this is the same analogy as people with business cards that say "Dr. xxx yyyy, Ph.D." -- only need one icon!

I may be in the minority, but I'm not a fan of the gigantic star on the grill, at least on the E class.

We recently had a similar thread, but on the AMG side, and I'd say you're definitely NOT in the minority.. I frankly think it's like taking a Rembrandt self portrait and painting a handle bar mustache and Santa beard, or adding a rock style drum section to Bach's Cantata #147..

But then, to each their own!

I am not a fan of the CL type grill. Take a look at it up close and the cheese squeezes through. To each his own, though.

Plus I love having that 3 pointed star facing me when I drive... it smiles at me, and is also a useful aiming point for pedestrians trying to j-walk!

People should know it's a Mercedes without your hitting them over the head with a big tristar on your grille. The people who don't know it's a Mercedes without seeing the big logo probably aren't worth impressing anyway. Understatement is part of the Mercedes tradition; leave the overstatement to the Cadillac Escalade crowd.

I agree the Mercedes Benz is not only a star in the hood. Its more than that!
Already they only remain 3 models with the star in the hood Class C, Class E, Class S,last one to abandon the tradition it was the CLK and he is much more pretty

Basically what the senior salesman at my dealer told me, and this guy is one of the top MB salesman in the country... All sedans should have the star on the hood... and all coupes and sportsters are in the grill... this has been MB Tradition for quite a long time, and to do otherwise, is to tell MB how to build their cars.. Plus, he said on trade-in or re-sale, the modification will cost you, in that they have to return the car to it's original factory looks.. to include OEM wheels if you've invested several thousand into fancy 19's or 20's..

I for one like my stuff OEM.. and will make some minot tweaks.. such as adding my 17" OEM wheels in place of the 16's but that's as far as I go.

Eitherway, MB220CDI.. it's a nice car, and if I'm getting 40mpg on the highway, I wonder what your getting? 50?

Also, go to the diesel forum too... that's were we can discuss diesel specific stuff should you want to...

Hi,
Sorry not to agree to that the star in sedans is for being with the star i hood. The Class A, New Class B, Class ML, Class G, Vito, New Class R, all heave the star in the grill and no star in the wood!
Im from Portugal and i can say to you is my car in the highway make 235 km per hour!
When i think to sell the car does not have problem because in 15 minutes I change to the grill and I put the star in the hood is very easy!!
Best Regards

In NY, the law is you have to word your biz card like this:

Dr. John Jones, DDS - or DVM, or OD, or MD or PhD, JD, or whatever your Doctorate is awarded in, so the public knows what kind of a doctor they are seeing, with no intentional or unintentional misrepresentation...

...you wouldn't want to show up at a PhD Doctor of American Literature's office & whip out your "unit" for him to look at whats growing on it... LOL

..on a car of this stature, 1 star is sufficient or its like "I'm driving a Benz... LOOK, I'M DRIVING A BENZ!"

For me, I have to be constantly congratulated by me for finally driving a Benz, so the upright hood STAR stays... right where I can see it. LOL

I personally like the E with the star on the hood. But it’s not going to leave a nice MB sig on the *** of that jay walker like the CLS would!

I only paid cash for the ‘03 e320. I know there are a billion for and against arguments for leasing but I like to change vehicles often and hate the fact of paying full throttle state tax. Lease at invoice or less, negotiate the incidentals, stick to 36/45000, dump at lease end that’s the ticket for me - always has been and always will be from now on. Besides it’s easier for my accountant to justify my picking up those weekly vig envelopes.

Oh, and the only letters on my business card are LLC.

New S has both...

The new S550 has both the star and the badge...reminds me of some of my older MB's.

Actually I lease the Volvo on the LLC for the wife's Photo business... Lease makes a lot of sense for a "Trade-in" car... but initial plan for the CDI was "a keeper" so I paid for it, but I usually advise friends who drive under 15-18K/year and trade in every 3-4 years to lease... it's better in the short run.

I've had my CL style grille on for a week now, it's the got the gigantic star and I've been having second thoughts about it. I put on a flat hood badge at the same time as well.

I don't like the star sticking up and am going to keep the flat hood badge, on the grille I was thinking about having it painted (just the black part, not the chrome) to match my car Tectite grey. I've been looking at the grille and I think I can remove the chrome without damage, have the grille painted and then put back together and re-install. Anyone tried this yet?

Cool A Vote for OEM

I am in agreement with CE750. When you purchase a $60M+ vehicle you should really accept the design as it is. I find the E Class one of the best looking cars on the market today. After a year, I can not be more pleased.

Changing the look implies a disagreement with the overall design, so why buy it? That being said, it is of course your right to do as you please. I also agree that the resale value will be impacted unless you can return the car to its original condition. By not doing so, you limit your market to those who like your concept car.

My final 2 cents: leave the mods to the vehicles that really need it.

Sunny, but cold in San Francisco.

The star-on-the-hood is what sets the E design from other classes in my opinion.

However to each, their own.
