My new custom exhaust pics

Thanks to CALBenzo's thread on his custom exhaust, I thought I'd try a similar setup on my vehicle. I was undecided on cutting the bumper and would have preferred not to, after I got the exhaust on it looked terrible and I had no choice but to cut the bumper or return to stock....I took the risk and cut the bumper. I have gotten some compliments...on the aesthetics, quality of cut out and sound.

Exhaust...
2 x Magnaflow 4" x9" oval polished SS mufflers, same side offset #14375
2 x Magnaflow oval SS polished tips
Muffler shop put on new exhaust
I did the cut-outs
Muffler shop raised exhaust to fit cut outs

Cost...
$400 even for mufflers, tips, install, tax
$60 for a Dremel kit
A few hours of my time
Replacing the rear bumper should I decide to go back to stock....expensive.

Cut outs key to success...
1. use a lift
2. lots of templates until you get it just right
3. put white contact paper over bumper in area to be cut
4. trace template onto contact paper with pen
5. use Dremel with cut off wheel and cut 1/4" inside of line
6. use Dremel sanding wheel to bring closer to line
7. remove contact paper
8. use half round file to get shape perfect
9. 150 grit sandpaper on edges
10. 220 grit sandpaper on edges
11. MB touch up paint pen on edges

Let's see what the rest of you think....go at it, will you like mine as you did CALBenzo's setup or will this get beaten down like the recent blue tooth install????

If there is enought interest I'll try and get an audio clip of the exhaust up. It is not too loud and sounds pretty good, of course that is all a matter of opinion.

Fellow Dallasite! That looks great! I will have to meet up with you some time and see how it sounds!

Does anybody know if I do this type mod, will it affect my Warranty (CPO)?

Will

Do your pics show the muffler with or without the bumper cut out? Any close-up shots? Thanks

Thanks for all the compliments! I do not believe this affects warranty, at least this is my understanding and hope to be true as I am still under factory warranty until 4/07 or another 34k miles, whichever is first.

All that was done was the the pipe cut behind the old muffler and a new muffler installed with tips. Even the stock hanger mount was used, there was no welding or cutting done to the car except the pipe. I haven't been to the dealer yet to see their reaction, I'm trying to get back in this week to get them to attempt to lower via DAS for a 4th try.

The Pics are with the cut-outs, except for obviously the one with the template on there. I just added 2 more pictures, I'll take some more if anybody wants to see a different angle and have our IT guy at work do an audio clip tomorrow which I'll post.

Looks nice! Do you have any more rear, "ground-level" pics?

Have you considered quad-tips?

here are some more ground level Tbone....that is not a vertical scratch in the close up of the tip but rather a reflection. I'll work on the audio clip tomorrow.

thanks again for the compliments.

Will - Due to the OEM design of the exhaust system with the downturn pipe it is impossible to put tips on the car without it looking very aftermarket and cheap. I bought some tips and never even installed them, they went straight to ebay. The tips available either are 90 degree type elbows or with fake exhaust exit points. Yes, they actually make tips for these cars where the exhaust does not really exit the actual tip but rather through the bottom or back of the tip (and MB sells these by Schatz!) The only way to get a decent looking exhaust is to replace the stock muffler and bumper or notch the bumper as I did. If you need any advice, the cutouts or want to see what I did let me know.

mbuskuhl, You have sold me. I will not do the tips. I will ask for your advise later this summer when I do this. We just got the car, but this is the way I would like to go.

How is the sound? Any different?

AUDIO CLIP IS DONE! This was recorded on PDA and once inside the car and once outside the car. The recording quality is low and it was windy out, not to mention this was done in a parking lot near my office.

Recording Outside the car: www.krdocs.com/outside.mp3

Recording Inside the car: www.krdocs.com/inside.mp3

Dual tips/single tips - matter of personal preference, I wanted oval tips and decided to go single, I did not want to try and copy the E55 with dual ovals. Round tips did not appeal to me.

haha I'm sorry I wasn't clear. What I meant is that I like the single tip on each side. I referred to it as dual because someone mentioned quad tips before. I do not like the quad-tips either because it just doesn't look right unless it is a true E55.

Oh, and in sounds good. I think its the right combination for a Mercedes because you don't want it too loud. Nice job!

looks good. Id never spend the $ on a tuner crap exhaust. This is perfect. Only thing I'd do differently is sit the tips higher into the rear apron to have cleaner lines. I dont like it when they hang below. But it looks great that the pipe goes straight back to the muffler, not jus the S bend tip add on that looks like CRAP that I've seen people do.

Links to sound clips will be working by 12:00PM CST on 3/31. My IT guy at work put them up for me but he's gone home for the day, he'll fix in the morning. Sorry.

It's been 4 years now since this thread was started.... exhaust sounds good, I still have it on the car. Not too loud. I know the link is down and I asked our IT guy to fix it before but he can't locate the audio files anymore. Sorry.
