Just ordered exhaust tips

Hi all,
I just ordered exhaust tips for my 2006 E350. I like the members that cut their bumpers and put on the nice quad exhaust, however... I am leasing and can't cut the bumper... but I still think these look good...

http://www.formymercedes.com/morepic...211-8831-6.jpg

Anyone chime in on install... looks really easy and straight forward...

I think there's a clamp, which you use to tighten the tips onto your current pipe.

IMO, the tips don't look good on the car. The tips DO LOOK like they were added on as an afterthought. There are many members on this forum who bought them and weren't pleased with the results.

Well, I got the email they are back ordered for three weeks...

So, what tips look good WITHOUT cutting rear bumper? From the pics, they seem better than most...

IMHO its the side-angle that kills it...I've seen a couple MBZ from the back that looked great, made me think I was going to go out and get some tips but then when I looked from the side or a rear quarter angle it looked really bad...I say cut the bumper and tuck 'em in or appreciate the fact that your rear is clean with no exposed tips...as much as I like a nice exhaust with big, bold tips integrated into the rear apron at the same time I appreciate the clean butt of my car

I would have to call the backorder a sign from the car gods. There are no tips that look good from the side without cutting the bumper.

I got under the car last night to have a look around. I think it is possible to remove the entire factory pipe work from the mid section back and put in a custom exhaust. It will just unbolt so no mods necessary to factory stuff.

What mufflers sound good on the V6? I wonder how bad it would look if they weren't fully tucked under the body work leaving me room as to NOT cut the bumper?

Might look a little "Japanese Import" look huh?

I have these tips and IMO they are the best looking out of the "bolt ons". Real Catback Exhaust (a'la CalBenz) with cutting the bumper is the best way to go for the best clean look (planning for summer). If you're in the Chicago area and want to see these in person....let me know.

Lion-

first off... that Vette is mean. Dave Hill did a great job at giving us Vette Junkies a great platform to work with.. .hahaha

I am in GA, so getting out to you will be few and far between. Do you have pics? I agree with these being the best bolt on. I am working with friend in seeing how we can "enhance" the tips. He suggested painting the bend black as to not see it so easily when viewed from the side.

If I don't cut the bumper... you will see any muffler set up I choose to retrofit... including the tips...

Another forum member had a great idea and painted his mufflers black... looks great IMHO. Maybe I could conseal the elbow bend a little by doing the same... Given my choices and leasing the car... my options are somewhat limited....

Since you have a lease, and don't want to cut the bumper, have you considered buying a used bumper from someone (the actual AMG bumper, or the AMG bumper from the AMG package)? The cutouts are already there.

Once the lease is up, you can sell the AMG bumper

Never thought of that. Aren't the AMG bumpers pricey? I was going to call my saleman and ask what is exceptable on turn in? This is my first lease so I don't what to expect. I am actually happy I don't need to worry about a trade in rape...

Yes, a bit pricey, but you should recoup some of the cost when you sell it later.

Hey bone-
I spoke to the salesman at the dealership. He said the dealership would not have an issue if I cut the bumper for quad tips if it looked okay. He said stuff like dropping the car down so low as to "ride" on the tires would be frowned upon... or repainting flames etc.

He said the car has to be able to sell off their lot and the mods need to look professionally done and not tacky....

I am wondering if I still go with the tips mentioned in my post, I could tuck them under better??? Or should I just go get new mufflers and weld them in place????

You should get his statement in writing before you cut your bumper. I'd go with new mufflers/tips then.

For some reason I thought you lived in the Chicagoland area...probably from your other post about Lake Forest, IL. Dave Hill and crew did a good job with the C5/C6. The C6 Z06 is a great bang for the buck in performance.

BTW....check your IM....

Well, I tried to get this in writing.. NO DEAL. He asked me what I was worried about and I stated, without writing.. I am hanging out my check book. He said don't worry about it.

What happens if the guy that stated this leaves the dealership... I guess we are only talking about a new bumper... and paint.. and installation...

Still have time to decide what to do... but I did realize going into my first lease that I would be limited to what I could do to my RENTED car. I can't wait until I get my dream car... newer E55! 38 months and counting...

Your dealer only gets the car if they decide to buy it from the leasing company. Otherwise, it goes back to the leasing company and gets sold at auction or offered to other dealers. You should be more worried about what the leasing company is going to think about the mods than what your salesperson thinks. But if you do it right and it looks good, a lease inspector might never notice.

Yeah... the salemans basically told me same thing. He said they would not buy the car from the lease company as it is hard to more a used E Class base model. HUH... I thought a lot of folks would be interested in getting into a off lease Benz at a good price. (I guess "good price" is subjective..)

I figured out another way to do this... I hope it works... We will see when I get the tips... Funny, I think welding up some pipes and mufflers would be cheaper than the tips at $268.

The fact is, they will be concerned with whether the car has had any body work, how the paint looks, and what the interior looks like. The car has to look saleable to a buyer on the used car lot... a used car buyer will not notice a well done mod like this, or if he does will appreciate a well done mod like this.

You can't expect a dealer's used car guy to guarantee you that your mod will make no difference to the store. They're interested in a quick in & out on your trade in. So if you do it, do it professionally & neatly, and it won't hurt you come trade in time.
