Interim Car? 2007 E320 CDI (not Bluetec)?

I was talking to a salesman at a dealer today about an '06 E320 CDI, when he mentioned that they had just received an allocation for the beginning of July for a 2007 E320 CDI. I expressed skepticism as the E320 Bluetec is not supposed to be out until October or so.

Has anyone heard that Mercedes is going to be selling an interim '07 E320 non-Bluetec CDI (with the inline 6) until the Bluetec is released? I'm confident that the Bluetec will not be released until the Fall.

They have been selling the I-6 E320 CDI since 2005. The new bluetech E320 CDI will be a V6 and it will be here this summer, my sales man told me they should get them at the end of June or early July.

That's contrary to what the press has been saying (October 2006) and what MBUSA stated in a press release on 4/26/06:

OFFICIAL PRESS RELEASE

Mercedes-Benz Diesel May Cure Sticker Shock at the Pump

MONTVALE, NJ –

[excerpt deleted]

BLUETEC – Diesel for the Future

Also scheduled to make its world retail debut in Fall 2006, Mercedes-Benz BLUETEC technology combines sophisticated engine design with a special exhaust after-treatment system to offer the cleanest diesel technology in the world. The E320 BLUETEC incorporates an oxidizing catalytic converter, a particulate filter, an advanced “denox” storage converter and a SCR catalytic converter.
To meet even more stringent emission requirements, the BLUETEC system could also be equipped with another innovation -- AdBlue injection. When AdBlue, a water-based urea solution, is injected into pre-cleaned exhaust gas, ammonia is released, converting nitrogen oxides into harmless nitrogen in a downstream SCR catalytic converter. Called SCR for Selective Catalyst Reduction, this process creates the most effective method of exhaust gas after-treatment currently available.

Did your salesperson cite anything that indicated that timeline has changed?

The I6 is history for the 2007 model year. The new V6 will be the engine of record in the GL320, E320, ML320, S320 and R320. They won't all have the Blutec additive until the 2008 model year. Now the E320 Bluetec won't go on sale until sometime next year, but the new V6 E320 will this fall. Bluetec is just an additional process to clean up emissions and the new V6 is clean enough to be sold without it in 45 states, but for those other 5 the new V6 needs the Bluetec system. The EPA and MB are still working out the details on that so it most likely won't be this fall. The new V6 won't go on sale in anything though until the cleaner diesel is in place nationwide and the risk of getting some of the older formula is eliminated so it will be at least October or so.

I spoke to the GM I know at another Mercedes dealer. His allocation/build sheet shows that he can order a 2007 E320 Diesel, July production. He also said that the order/build date doesn't mean that the car will be delivered under an "ordinary" timeline, only that the order can be placed. He speculated that Mercedes would either build and hold for delivery, or hold on the build, until they established a firm release date.

Waiting until the Fall when low sulfur fuel is fully available does make sense, as the new V6 will not, as I understand it, be able to deal with the current higher sulfur content fuel.

That helps. I may not wait to get the new V6, and am looking at either a new '06 in the color and equipped as I like (premium w/ standard roof, sat, lighting package, folding rear seat) or a used '05 that has some nice equipment on it (lighting package, pano, full leather, nav, active seats, Logic 7). Decisions, decisions....

The I6 has been out of production for six months or more.

V6 arrived in Europe in early 2005 and in W211 there midyear.

BTW the I6 arrived in 1999 in the W210, but not until 2005 and the W211 in the USA.

I'd guess the last I6 W211 for USA has already been built.

One suspects the 270CDI (I5) in the Sprinter is over with, too.

As for "schedules," they're always subject to change of course. Quick rise in gas prices could motivate. 2006 CDIs perhaps already or nearly sold out.

V6 diesels are already in USA of course. In Alabama being installed in MLs, R-class, and GLs for foreign markets.
