Question How do you remove...?

How does the black plastic shroud around the instrument cluster come out. Mine just began rattling and it is driving me insane.

Thank you!

I would drive it to the dealership and let them worry about it

Since I've located the rattle and it is 100% from the shroud I'd like a shot at it myself as I'm confident it will be an easy fix with some felt tape etc. If I can't fix it I'll add it to the list for the 1000 mile check up.

I guess I have to admire your patience with a rattle in a $90,000 car.

It is held in by 2 clips on the top and 2 on the bottom. The clips are part of the housing. The clips go around round plastic studs inside the dash. I just popped mine out and back in 30 seconds with no tools to see how many clips held it in. Lift up the bottom center with both thumbs and then pull towards you, it seems kind of hard to actually brake something - it's easier to take it out then put back. I attached a picture of the housing when I did my Passport 8500 LED visual alert, we should have the same housing.

If it was loose, you should be able to visually tell and you may just need to pop a clip back in place.

I was able to stop the rattle by sliding a credit card between the two just below the odometer.

Thanks for the pic and details. Since it appears it's all one piece, it looks like I'll be needing a whole new cluster as my rattle emanates between the black plastic shround and the clear plastic that covers the gauges (unless there's another piece that goes in front of what's shown in the pic, as the odo reset appears to be sticking too far out?).

Thanks but I have no patience when it comes to the car, if I fix it myself then I don't have to wait.

it's an optical illusion in the picture, the odo reset is normal. The black plastic is seperate from the clear cover on the instrument cluster. You basically have only 2 parts there, black plastic trim which snaps out and then the instrument cluster held in by some screws.

Tried to remove the black trim ring/shroud, it would not budge as it's in there really tight. I was able to get my thumbs under the center and pulled pretty hard but the clips must be very tight. Any thoughts? If not I'll let the dealer get to it but I'd love a shot at it as I know where the rattle is.

Thank you

I was going to get some pictures this afternoon for you and I see you got it worked out and fixed on the E55 forum. Don't blame you for wanting to do it yourself, the dealer didn't even know how to change the gear shift knob on mine so I did it myself, came out great.
