you gotta be kidding. Are you sure yours isn't a CDI? I'll be lucky to get close to 23mpg on my 4matic all highway and driving very mellow. Post like this makes me wonder if my car is having problems or not.

My average mpg is closer to 27 per tank and it is not unusual for me to see 30 mpg on my way to work and only 25mpg on my ride home. D*** Route 80 traffic.

Is that 111k miles on your clock? For an 03? damn, I thought 31k on my car was a lot.

Anyone else getting over 25mpg?

Specifically anyone getting this on a 4matic?

Your 4Matic won't get fuel economy like the RWD cars. Your car weighs more, and your axle ratio is lower (3.27:1 versus 3.07:1).

My 2005 CDI used to get nearly 40 MPG on long freeway runs, but running errands around the city with lots of stops and starts, it would frequently get only about 20 MPG.

I just got back from a 2,700-mile trip. This included a lot of mountain driving, driving through cities and driving all over Yellowstone National Park. My E320 4-Matic averaged 28.2 MPGs for the whole loop. I really can't complain. I even had one tank where I averaged 29.9 for the whole 520 miles that I drove it. I did keep the speed bellow 85 MPH, but still averaged about 68 MPH.

I still put about 42 PSI front and 45 rear on the OEM Continentals along with a recent oil change and cleaned K&N air filters. I had 3 adults, 1 child and a full trunk for the whole trip. I am just 200 miles short of 20,000 miles on the odometer and the car is still getting progressively quicker, quieter and better MPGs.

I am finally starting to like this E better than my all-time-favorite 1991 300E that I truly loved. I never disliked my W211, but it takes me a while to get used to my cars and then truly like them. This W211 is probably the best highway car I have ever owned! This includes the wonderful older S class models from the 1980s that my family always had.

If I think of it, I will take a picture of my MFD. I really don't think that my 4-Matic is really costing me too much in fuel economy, but it sure is unbeatable in snow!

BTW, my dealer informed me that my brake pads were still at 90% at 17,500 miles. I don’t think that I used much of my pads on this recent trip either, so I don’t see any reason why I will not get at least 50K miles out of these OEM pads and rotors. Who knows, I might hit 70K like I have on some of my other cars.

It’s no wonder you can get 32mpg when your average is 59mph. Did you reset the trip counter when you were at cruising speed or is that average from the time you started the car with a cold engine?

This is from the time I started the car with a cold engine.

The interesting thing is that when New Jersey switches to the winter gas formula in October, my gas mileage goes down between 5 and 10%.

Doesn't your winter gas have alcohol added to it? I hear the flex fuel cars that run on E85 get poorer fuel economy than when they are running on pure gasoline. (The 2007 C230 Sport Sedan is MB's first E85 burner.)

Alcohol, MBTE, Ethanol, Water? I don't know, but my mileage does drop.

Had the car 2 years & i drive moderatly agressive, but....
  • city 16 mpg
  • highway 20 mpg

have 18 inchers on and 36-38psi all around.
RWD e320

Very disapointing to me! Thought at one point it might be the local gas. Maybe they're juicin it w/ lil too much ethanol??? tried a lot of dirrerent stations/brands.... dunno

Anybody from NYC have similar results?

I'm on the same boat as you, I guess it's hit or miss. But are you guys just reading this based on your display or are you actually measuring how much you fill and drive each time and dviding the numbers?

At this rate, pretty soon I'm gonna have to **** in the gas tank.

My mileage estimate is based on the display, but it seems to be pretty close. I get about 500 miles out of a tank and usually fill the tank with 17-18 gallons.

Man, this is really killing me, I fill my tank @ about 275-325 miles after a top off and top of about 15-16g.

Sweet mileage... My lowest was 11.3MPG city on one tank and highest was 28.4 FRWY on another. I now average 14.8 (or so) per tank in the city and about 24.5 FRWY.

Thats the spirit. Too many people boasting bout good gas milage. Lets see who can register the best worst milage....feel not ashamed any longer...lol

anybody know how to actually test the ethanol content from gas? They have 10% posted all over the pumps but, my conspiracy theory is that gas companies are fudguin a bit. If i understand it (and I don't very well) then the higher % then the lower the mpg... u think they are regulated well?...any thoughts

I've taken two long driving vacations in my 2004 E320. In both cases, the car was heavily loaded with luggage. The first trip was from Arizona to Minnesota via Yellowstone on the way. Total mileage was around 5,000 miles. The computer said we averaged a bit over 28 MPG. I measured exactly 27 MPG the old fashioned way by keeping track of how much fuel I actually used.

The second trip was from Arizona up into British Columbia and Alberta. Total mileage was 4,670. I didn't keep track of the fuel used but the computer said we averaged 28.4 MPG.

These trips included every type of driving situation you could encounter from high speed Interstate to climbing 8 to 10 thousand foot mountain passes.

I noticed that average fuel economy would climb to over 30 MPG according to the computer if we kept our Interstate speeds under 75. Once over 80, the mileage dropped to 26-27.

I suspect that since most of my driving was in cooler weather, that helped the mileage.

BTW, this is the best long distance car I've ever owned. I've taken long driving vacations for decades and have owned three Mercedes and two BMW's. This car is outstanding in every way. It could use a bit more power on long mountain grades but a flick of the wrist and the transmission downshifts to 4th and trucks right on up the mountain.

I can't imagine how fuel economy could be any better given the car's performance.

bumpity bump this old thread

Decided to monitor my MPG during a recent road trip. I did hit 30.2 mpg at one point, but I didn't have my camera phone ready. Oh wells, I had a total of 4 people in the car. I also have the Sprintbooster...so I guess it's safe to say that the Sprintbooster does NOT affect your fuel economy. (unless you keep testing the SB by toying w/ the gas pedal)

Used to do old fashion calculations with my dad's 210 E320 and he'd consistently avg 25mpg's mixed city/hwy. Those SOHC 3V engines were built to be very fuel efficient, and they are.

If I want to get 25mpg's out of my 300E I have to pu$$y-foot around and that means painfully slow driving. The obc on my 540 is accurate to 5% - 10% and I can top 30mpg's if I keep it below 70mph on the highway.
