MP3 question

In the COMMAND instruction booklet you can read about how the MP3 portion works and I was kinda assumeing that it applied to both the built-in player as well as the CD changer. But when I put in an MP3 CD in the changer I can get it to play but I cannot see the folder structure and browse the content as I can with the built-in CD drive.

Is that expected? I seems like a shortcut and somewhat of a cludge if that is the case!

That is how it worked on my '05 CDI. I think you have to live with it.

Well, that just sucks. I was hoping that this might work in stead of haveing to install the iPod kit.

According to posts regarding operation with the I-Pod kit, you may not be very happy with that solution either. It sounds to me like the best solution would be to burn a DVD MP3 disk and then just use the single slot for playback. I think one disk can hold more than you need, and you can access folders, etc. I was about to experiment with the DVD burning, but then decided that Sirius satellite radio would satisfy my need for infinite numbers of tunes.

Hmm, does the single drive read DVD? -or even better, does it read double layer DVDs?

Late models (such as yours) should read DVD from the single slot. Don't know about double layer.

Major bummer! The drive doesn't read DVDs. I burned a single layer disk and I get a CD error. I beleive that when MB in their wisdom removed the DVD movie playback from the COMMAND they also removed the DVD drive. So newer COMMANDs can only play normal CDs...

The problem here is that I tried to burn a DVD with ~4.4GB of MP3s in using UDF 1.02. The disk was burned using Roxio Creator Classic 8 but the drive doesn't see it and pops out the disk.

I had the same problems

I was in the exact same boat doing the same things and having the exact results.

I decided to get a Euro Command unit...

It turns out my US Command unit didn't even have a DVD drive in it so no backdoor info would ever work.

Now I burn DVD MP3 discs that work great but so far I haven't had any luck getting "Dual Layer" DVDs to recognize. It is curious though that I put dual layer DVD Movies in and they appear to work fine. If someone knows the trick to getting DL DVD MP3 discs to work, please reply

I guess I cannot integrate Sirus Sat Radio in the system now but my Nav system still works great (in fact, it appears to show MORE info than before as it tells stuff like Latitude, Longitude and elevation, etc...) and I had to turn off the sync for my clock as it was trying to show European Time.

Overall, I love my new Command and I was able to intall it in less than 30 minutes and I think I only touched 4 screws.

The MP3 option isn't really practical depending on how you have encoded your music. I absolutely don't want to loose any quality so I have ripped all my 400+ CDs using a lossless format which gives me about 50% compression but the sound output is the same as CD quality. The IPOD integration system is my only viable option as I've maxed out the 60GB storage capacity already. Why do you say the IPOD kit would not work well?

I said he might not be very happy with the IPOD kit. I didn't buy the IPOD kit because others in this forum have complained that the interface through the MFD (speedometer) is cumbersome and less useful than the IPOD screen, the COMAND (nav screen) doesn't show IPOD information but instead just says "AUX", and the passenger is unable to control the IPOD while it is docked in the interface. For these reasons, plus the rediculous cost of the kit and installation, I bought a $4.98 stereo miniplug and connect through the AUX jack in the glove box. The passenger gets to "play DJ" on long trips, or I just select the playlist I want to hear before I back out of the driveway. If your only concern is to allow the driver, and the driver only, to have control via the steering wheel buttons and the MFD, then the kit is for you. For me, it doesn't get the job done.

This is good advice and makes complete sense. I'm going to get the AUX cable so I have it handy for a pessenger to play DJ. 90% of the time I'm the only person in the car so I need to have the IPOD kit. It would have been so wonderful if it displayed the album art as well as album and track information on the command screen.

If you get the kit you will lose the AUX jack in the glove box.
