Navigation frozen!
have had some issues with my nav.- freezing command/switching off etc.
first visit - flashed system with software.
second visit - still switching off - replaced navigation in trunk.
third visit- no map - cleaned disc.
well yesterday the map freezes and after awhile the command switches off and switches back on and everything works.
last night the screen went black but i could hear the radio and was able to adjust volume only.....
i made another appointment. what should i insist that they replace....
from my understanding all that is left to do is replace command and the gateway...correct?

believe it or not, I had 3 Navi units fail this summer. They traced the problem to a bac cd changer, replacet it, and the nav in the trunk, and all has been well for almost a month.

Sounds like the COMAND is bad. The audio gateway is basically just an audio amplifier so it shouldn't affect the display on the COMAND. Sometimes when the gateway goes down it takes EVERYTHING out, display and sound but that's not what it sounds like you described.
Make sure you emphasize that the display goes out but audio still works. This will lead them right to the COMAND.

I had a similar problem. The screen went black when I hit the NAV button and wouldn't work again until I turned the car off, took out the key, waited 5 min. and restarted the car. When I ejected the NAV DVD, however, everything worked fine (when I went to NAV it said "Navigation is not available" or something like that, but I could change back to radio, etc. w/o issue).
The dealer fixed it and said the problem was a mismatch between the firmware of the DVD unit in the trunk and the AGW and the COMAND software. Basically, CSR said that the last time I went in, the COMAND had been updated with new software, but the drive and AGW had not been updated- so the three devices couldn't talk to each other.
That may all be B/S, but it works now and only took them an hour or so to fix, so that lends some credibility. I can also tell they didn't replace the COMAND or the DVD drive (unless they re-created the little scratches on them).

mine was very bad when i got the car. it would freeze/shut down and reboot every 20 minutes. after the visits it does it once a day where the map will freeze but the directions and voice prompts will keep on going on the steering display and half of the nav. screen...then after a while the whole comand will shut down and immediately reboot and default to no:1 radio channel or if there is a disc in the single drive that will start playing.
it goes in to tuesday...
